ADVANCES TO STATE Shallotte Middle Quintet Wins Brunswick Town Bowl A team from Shallotte Middle School will compete for the state History Bowl championship Mon day. May 23, at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh as winners of the Brunswick Town History Bowl. The district championship team also received S75 and a trophy for its school after claiming the title over competitors South Brunswick Middle and Waccamaw Elementary in the Feb. 2X competition at Bruns wick Town State Historic Site near Southport. Members of the winning team were Tonia Jackson, Ashley Hardy, Jill Rivenbark, Chrissy Hew ett and Jaime Atwell. Their coach is social studies teacher Faye Rogers. Working against the clock, the competing teams had to answer questions spanning KM) years of state history before Reconstruction, as well as questions about all 24 state historic sites, said Brenda Marshburn, assistant manager at Brunswick Town State Historic Site. In the state bowl, the questions will cover another KM) years of North Carolina history. In past years the Brunswick Town and Fort Fisher state historic sites jointly sponsored a regional event open to schools in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick counties. This year only the three schools from Brunswick County chose to participate. "1 really don't know why," said Marshburn. "I guess there are just so many extracurricular activities that they have to give up something." Shallotte Middle claimed first place by defeating South Brunswick 555-320 in the fianl round. Wac camaw finished third. Competing teams and their facul ty sponsors were as follows: ?South Brunswick Middle: B.J. Eversole. Jeremy Alltop, Steve Anderson.
