Residential
Landscaping For Beginners
It is a warm spring day. You arc
outside surveying your landscape
and wondering what can be done to
beautify your yard. Something about
your landscape doesn't look just
right but you cannot identify the
problem. Sound familiar?
The creation of a beautiful land
scape requires imagination, plan
ning, and follow-through. Planning
and follow-through are critical. The
primary goal of landscape design is
to create functional areas that com
plement your home and are beautiful
to view.
The toughest aspect of designing
a good landscape involves the plan
ning. A well-planned landscape is
beautiful and, in most cases, less ex
pensive to install and maintain than
an unplanned landscape. In addition,
good planning will provide maxi
mum benefit and enjoyment to all
the residents of the home.
If you arc planning a landscape,
the first step is to inventory the envi
ronment. Soil types, existing plant
material, orientation of your house
in relation to the lot, lot size, topog
raphy, and other factors that would
influence space utilization or plant
growth should be considered. This
process is often referred to as the
site analysis and is critical to the
success of a good landscape job.
The second step involves balanc

ing your needs versus your desires.
Sit down and determine how you
use your yard. Do you have chil
dren? Have a dog? Many people tell
me that they like flower gardening
hut only spend 30 minutes a week in
the yard. A flower garden will not
flourish with only 30 minutes of
care a week unless you have a pro
fessional gardener or a very small
bed of flowers. Assess your family
needs first and then consider the
time you have to spend working on
the landscape.
The third step is the actual design
of your landscape. Most landscape
designers do this in the form of a
scaled drawing, although an orga
nized set of notes would accomplish
the same objective In order to de
sign your landscape, divide the yard
into three major use areas: the public
area, private area and utility area.
The public area is that portion of
your yard that a visitor or passerby
would see.
I"he main goal of designing the
public area is to blend the architec
ture of your home into the surround
ing environment in an aesthetically
pleasing manner. Hie focal point of
the public area landscape should be
the front entrance to your house
(note that flowers, statuary, bird
baths, and the like may distract the
eye from the main focal point?the
front door!).
The private area is usually in the
back of the house. Consider dividing
the private area into sub-use areas: a
patio for entertainment, an ornamen
tal flower garden, and/or a chil
drens* play area. A well-landscaped
private area invites you in through
its design features. Plan the private
area to fit your lifestyle, your hob
bies and your family.
The utility area is used to hide the
necessities of modern living. Gar
bage cans, clothes line, vegetable
garden, utility shed, air conditioner
and miscellaneous junk should be

located in the utility area. Try to par
tition the utility area away from the
private area.
Once you have your area planned,
you are ready to begin fitting plants
to your design. This requires some
knowledge of plants and a thorough
understanding of design principles
(e.g.. the use of form, texture and
color as they relate to your house and
plants). Beautiful landscapes do not
just happen: they must he planned.
