Hailicit Central led 3.5 with 4:47 left in the first half before host West Brunswick started turning things around. The Lady Trojans got to within 10 points in the fourth quarter but couldn't get closer. "I don't know if we were scared or what but we had a terrible first half," West Brunswick Coach Brenda Council said. "I was proud of them for sticking it out and play ing well in the second half." Tilly McNeill came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points for Harnett Central, which was sched uled to compete in the sectional semifinals Wednesday at Burlington Williams High School. Freshman Donicia Moody led West Brunswick with 14 points. Sophomore Kaneka Grissett added nine points, and senior center Nicole Norris scored eight in her final high school game. "It was a good game for us to travel so far to win. I'm real tickled to win the first round with the young group I've got," Harnett Central Coach Davis Bradley said. The visitors, third-place finishers in the Triangle Conference, used a full-court press to disrupt West Brunswick in the first half. Harnett k. ivjiw>>>) q? t ? f% I. w UlWIU cept passes and converted the turnovers into easy transition bas kets. "That's what has gotten us to where we are is defense," Bradley said. "We did a good job with that tonight." Harnett put together a pair of 9-0 runs and an 11-0 spurt in the first 12 minutes of the game, but early foul trouble forced Bradley to go to his bench and allowed West to cut into the lead. Trailing 31-5, the Lady Trojans scored eight unanswered points and pulled to within 36-14 at halftime. West, which also had several starters in foul trouble, continued to rally in the second half. The Lady Trojans scored the first eight points of the third quarter to trim Harnett's lead to 36-22 with 4:15 remaining. Harnett Central led 40-24 late in the third quarter, but West Bruns wick scored eight of the next 10 points. Two free throws by Moody pulled West Brunswick to within 42 32 with 3:30 left in the game. But Harnett Central responded with a 6-0 run to pull away. West's Grissett nailed a pair of three-point ers in the final minute. "I think our biggest problem was trying to just hang on in the second half and just get through," Bradley said. Shalera Austin scored 11 points and Heather McDougald had eight for Harnett Central, which improved to 14-11. West Brunswick's girls ended the scsson with five s!rB??h! losses and finished 8-17.
