Brunswick Students Earn Honors At Regional Careers Competition Could you develop a high school plan of study from a given scenario for a rising ninth grader? Conduct a business meeting, using every kind of motion, with a district attorney and an industrial manager as judges? Write a full technical report in 60 minutes, using four different information sources? Those were just some of the 14 competitions Shal lotte Middle School vocational technical education stu dents entered at the Region V-A Career Exploration Club Leadership Conference and Competitive Events held March 3 at Brunswick Community College and the Odell Williamson Auditorium. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from 18 middle schools in seven southeastern counties participat ed, with 419?all first-place winners in school competi tions?registering for competitions, said Lois Morgan, Shallotte Middle School vocational technical education tcacher and regional Career Exploration Clubs Advisor. Written by the N.C. Department of Public Instruc tion, the contests were new in format and content to align with the new middle school vocational technical education curriculum. "No one knew what to expect," she said. "They were difficult and very trying." Students from three Brunswick County schools brought home awards. Shallotte Middle students won six contests and won election to six club officer positions. They returned with 12 trophies, 10 medals and "much pride for a job well done," said Morgan. Twenty-six Shallotte Middle School students arc eli gible to attend State Leadership Conference and Com petitive Events May 15 in Winston-Salem. Officer elections won by Shallotte Middle were Jason Holden. president; Jeanctte Warner, First vice pres ident; Melissa Inman, treasurer; Christi Inman. report; Crystal Hewett, sentinel; and Natalia Stevenson, parlia mentarian. Runners-up were Kam Spence, for second vice pres ident; llailey Galloway, for secretary; Ashley Helms, for historian; and Jamond Fullwood, for sergeant-at-arms. Holden, a sixth grader, will compete for state presi dent at the state conference, while Warner, a seventh grader, will be installed as state first vice president. Rivenhark, who placed first in technical report writing at the regional event, advances to state competition. Shallotte Middle students placed as follows in other regional competitive events: Crystal Bellamy, second place, career development plan; Demaris Lance, Devon Varnam and James Inman. second place, career display; Amanda Varnam, Courtney McKenzie, Hollis Woodard, second place, career video; Jennifer Barnes and Nina Gore, second place. Helping Hands; Anna Adams, Mary Morris. Travis Ovcrocker, Nicole Haircloth and Jason Lamberton, third place, parliamentary procedure; Pete Testa, second in public speaking, on the topic, "Com munication Skills Hnhance Success and leadership." Winners from Waccamaw Elementary School were Terra Millikcn, second place, technical report writing, and Ixigh Milligan, third place, problem solving and creative thinking. I^ivonda Marlow was elected regional secretary. Jonathan Simmons was runner-up for first vice president. Other Iceland Middle School students placed as fol lows: April Ward, runner-up for president; Lynn Britt, second runner-up for reporter; Amanda Reeves and Ashley Williamson, third place, performing arts; Stephen Evans and Mike Archuleta, third place, problem solving and creative thinking. Shallotte Announces Second Honor Roll Shallotte Middle School has an nounced its honor roll for the second nine weeks grading period of the school term.
