B.J. Eversolc of Ix>ng Beach, an eighth grader at South Brunswick Middle School, will he making his second bid for the championship. Troy Simmons of Ash, an eighth grade student at Waccanv>w F.le mentary, will be competing at the state level for the first time. Eversole, 14, finished sixth in the state in the 1W3 bee, and said he hopes to do better this year. He's been practicing with cards from the "National Geographic on Assign ment" board game he won last year. "I think I've got a pretty good chance this year," he said. Added Paula Clemmons, South Brunswick social studies department curriculum chairman, "He was beat en last year by eighth graders. He knows a lot more this year and he's used to the competition." The son of Big and Marselle Eversole of i>ong Beach, Eversole said he has always liked geography and all other areas of social studies. "I like learning about people and places," he said. "I like learning facts." "This is a kid who knew the presi dents before he started kinder garten," said his mother. "He's al ways had access to books and he's always been interested." Also aiming for the state champi onship and a trip to the nationals is Troy Simmons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Simmons of Ash. This will be the fourth time in five years that Waccamaw Elemen tary has had a finalist in the state I EVERSOLE SIMMONS bee. Michael Todd competed in 1990 and 1991 and James White in 1992, said social studies teacher Mary (Catherine Griffith. According to N.C. Geography Bee Coordinator John Ellington, more than 9(H) schools participate in the bee this year. Winners in each school competition took a written examination, with the top 1 (K) scor ers qualifying for the state finals. *IT?e state bee will be held in two locations, the Education Building and First Baptist Church in Raleigh. Nationally the Geography Bee is sponsored by the National Geo graphic Society, which publishes National Geographic magazine, and corporate co-sponsors. North Carolina's state winner will advance to the National Geography Bee, receiving an all-expenses paid five-day trip to Washington, D.C., and $100. Alex Trebek, host of tele vision's "Jeopardy!" will serve as host of the nationals again this year. The geography bee was begun in an effort to promote the teaching of geography in schools and the impor tance of geography after a nationwide survey approximately a decade ago indicated that most United States stu dents were geographically illiterate. DECA is a national association of marketing students. Paige Sloane of Ocean Isle Beach, a junior, was voted into of fice at the March M-12 state confer ence, the first West Brunswick High School student to hold the office. She succeeds J.D. Ciidley, a senior at North Brunswick High School. She was one of three West Bruns wick DECA members who qualified to compete at the national level. Sloane will advance as overall state runner-up in hospitality tourism and marketing. She was also an event runner-up in a sales role-play in which she had to sell a trip to Dis ney World. Dan Martin, a senior from Sunset Beach, was a state finalist in the re tail merchanising-master employee competition. Marcus Bernard of Cedar Grove was a state finalist in quick-service restaurant manage ment. All three students had to take written tests in their area of competi tion and participate in two role plays. All are second-year chapter members. The three will travel to Detroit, Mich., April 22-27, accompanied by faculty member Terri Brett. Brett and Harriett Hemphill are chapter advisors. Also at the state conference awards ceremony. West Brunswick DECA Chapter received a three-start activity award in recognition of its achievements during the year.
