West Brunswick has just two se niors this year and only four players back from last year's varsity club. The corps of the team is the 1993 ju nior varsity squad that won the Waccamaw Conference champi onship. West Brunswick was scheduled to play at Waccamaw Academy on Tuesday. The Trojans will host Wilmington Hoggard Friday at 4 p.m. West will travel to Lumbcrton on Saturday for a doublehcader starting at 10 a.m. The Trojans play Lum berton in the first game and Winston-Salem Carver in the second game. Despite missing several athletes due to injury, Coach Wesley Shoemaker's squad racked up 75 points to hold off second-place fin isher South Brunswick by 15 points. South Columbus took third with SI points. Frink was one of the top perform ers for West Brunswick, winning the long jump, triple jump and 300-me ter hurdles, lie also ran the opening leg of West Brunswick's winning 400-mctcr relay team. Also contributing for the Trojans were Phillip Johnson with first-place finishes in both the shot put and dis cus events. Other West Brunswick winners were Derek Frink in the high jump, Steve Holmes in the 100-meter dash and Tim Vaught in the 1600-meter run. The 4(X)-meter relay team includ ed Reggie Frink, Dexter Bass, Wil liam Stanley and Holmes. Darrius Vaught, Bruce McAfee, Tim Vaught and Chris Brown teamed up to give West a win in the 3200-meter relay. In the girls' meet. South Colum bus won 11 events and scored 102 points to take first place. South Brunswick was second with 52 points, and West Brunswick finished third with 13 points. West's Christy Thorpe finished first in the shot put and discus events. West Brunswick's track team is scheduled to compete Thursday af ternoon at South Brunswick. The match was played in cold and windy condi tions, and all of the doubles matches were played in partial darkness. Winning their singles matches for the Trojans were the top three seeds?Hardy, Woolen and Trull? as well as the sixth seed McGowan, who won in a third-set tiebreaker. With the team score tied at 4-4, the outcome came down to the num ber two doubles match. West Bruns wick's Wooten and Varnam defeated Jonathan Gore and Larry Faulk, 8-5. The match didn't end until 7:30 p.m., and car headlights were used to light up the South Columbus court. West Brunswick broke South Columbus' serve and won the match on a service return by Varnam. West Brunswick Girls Sweep Topsail In Big M Softball Doubleheader West Brunswick's Softball team swept a doubleheadcr at Topsail last Thursday to even its record at 2-2. The Lady Trojans won the first game 14-4 and camc back to win the nightcap U-6. Amanda Reeves was the winning pitcher in both games. "Kaneka Grissctt hit the ball real well against Topsail," Coach Tracey James said. "She had a solo home run out of the park and also had two triples in the first game." "Jessi Winfree is hitting the ball real well," James added. "Jackie Moll has been a pleasant surprise for us. She's playing second base and hitting the ball well for us." In non-conference action last Tuesday, New Hanover swept a dou bleheadcr from visiting West Brunswick. The Wildcats won the opener 23-4 and took the second game 29-10. Ginger Nixon had three home runs and seven RBI to lead the New Hanover attack. Lakesha McCrae had a grand slam in the sccond game, Lynn Snyder had two homers and four RBI and Malia Snyder had a home run and two RBI. "We're very young 2nd inexperi enced. We had the first-game jitters at New Hanover. 1 played everybody in those games to try to Figure out a lineup,'" James said. "Things are be ginning to solidify for us as far as a lineup." West Brunswick was scheduled to host Wallace-Rose Hill on Tuesday. New Hanover will visit West for a doubleheadcr Thursday afternoon. The Lady Trojans travel to Wallace Rose Hill on Friday.
