Duke's My Last Hope
To Reach Final Four
I'm looking over the NCAA Basketball Tournament brackets fol
lowing last weekend's games and I'm not liking what I see.
Itiree of the tour teams that I selected to emerge from the field of 64
and reach this year's Final Four have already been eliminated. They
didn't even make it to the Sweet Sixteen.
Hrst there was California. This, my friends, was a stupid pick. Cal
went down in the first round to
none other than those lovable lads
from Wisconsin-Green Bay (Fight
Song: "Dairy Is Divine").
See ya Cal.
Then there was the University
of Massachusetts. The Minutemen
survived their first round game
against Southwest Texas State, but
lost in the second round to
Maryland.
See ya U Mass.
Then there was North Carolina. It really caused me a lot of pain to
pick the Tar Heels, one of my least favorite college basketball teams, but
I couldn't overlook their talent-laden roster.
As we all learned Sunday, there's a lot more to winning basketball
games than talent. Boston College dropped Carolina like a bad habit.
See ya Heels.
My last hope is Duke. I really hate Duke. I don't know why I even
picked them to reach the Final Four. But I did and now I have to live
with it.
If the Blue Devils can get past Marquette on Thursday, they would
face either Kansas or Purdue in the Southeast Regional Finals on
Saturday.
I would like to have at least one team representing me in the Final
Four, but if Duke loses before then it wouldn't upset me at all.
Baseball Marathon
The West Brunswick High School baseball team is gearing up for its
annual "marathon" game. The Trojans will play 100 innings of hardball
on Saturday, April 9.
The l(K)-inning game is held each spring to raise money for the
baseball program. Fhe goal is for each player to get pledges from 10
people for 10 cents an inning. If the team plays 100 innings, each player
would raise $1(X).
"All the money from the 100-inning game goes to buy things that I
can't gel from the budget," Coach Mike Alderson said. The team hopes
to raise enough money this year to purchase a portable batting cage.
Anyone interested in making a pledge can call Alderson at the high
school, 754-4338.

Although he spent just two years at South Brunswick, Millwood cer
