Local Students To Participate In Regional Engineering Bowl Brunswick County students will ho among 4(M) gathering at East Columbus High School Saturday to compete in an engineering jam boree. The annual event is sponsored by the Region O Council for the Ad vancement of Minorities in En gineering (ROCAME). Student teams from 16 middle schools and 13 high schools from Brunswick, Columbus, New Han over and Pender counties will com pete in 11 engineering events and a Quiz Bowl. The events are run by engineers from local industries in eluding Carolina Power and Light, General Electric. Cape Industries, Coming and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Other sponsors include Federal Paper Board, Dupout and the N.C. Science and Mathematics Alliance at UNCW. First-, second- and third-place medals will be awarded for each event, and a county trophy will be awarded based on cumulative scores. U.S. Rep. Eva Clayton will assist in the awards presentation, sched uled from 4 until 4:30 p.m. Child First Aid Training Slated A four-hour workshop on infant and child first aid child care training will be offered May 10 and 12 by the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension Service office. Sessions will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 30 p.m. each day in the Agriculture Building at the Bruns wick County Government Center in Bolivia. The course does not cover infant and child cardiopulmonary resusci tation, said Pearl W. Stanley, a coun ty home economics extension agent. May 3 is the deadline for payment of the registration fee. The cost is $12 per person. The fee is only $6.75 for anyone who has attended other health and safety units and have the workbook. The traininiz session is limited to 12 persons unless special arrange ments are made. Checks should be made payable to County of Brunswick and mailed to Pearl W. For Appointments Call: 754-2920 Show Celebrates Multi-Cultural Heritage "All Together Now," billed as multi-cultural experience, will bring to Brunswick County audiences on April 29 the nostalgia of Appal achian storytelling with the music and dance of the Cherokee Indian and the African, and more, wrapped in poetry. Two one-hour and 15-minute shows are scheduled by the non profit organization Catch the Spirit of Appalachia. Both will be present ed in the (Well Williamson Audi torium at Brunswick Community College, the first at 12:30 p.m.. and the second at 7:30 p.m. Shows are free to the public, with reservations required. The shows have been underwritten by BCC through state community service funds. "We're trying to increase aware ness that we are multicultural here at Brunswick Community College." said Velva Jenkins, associate dean of continuing education and a member of the college's cultural diversity team. "We're real excited about the pro gram. It's different from what we're used to on this campus." Amy Garza, an Appalachian nov elist and storyteller, begins the pro gram with stories such as "'Hie Banjer and the Old Holler Log," told by her mountain family.
