Mullis Finishes First In Shores Nifty Niners Tournament Martha Mullis shot gross 57 and "ct I2 '?Jakc first placc i? ,hc Carolina Shores Nifty Niners tour nament last Thursday. Golfers played at Brierwood and Ocean Isle Beach golf courses. Run ners-up in the gross division were C harlotte Martin with 59 and Eileen Van Audebark with 61. Cynthia Swanson shot net 33 to finish second to Mullis. Jaye Arlotta was third with net 34. Brick Landing Ladies The team of Joy Cavan, Rose mary Dobson. Paulic Waddle and Ruth Gardner finished first in the Brick Landing Ladies Golf Asso ciation tournament last Thursday. Teams counted the three best balls on each hole. Finishing second was the foursome of Alice Grossman, Ursula Styczynski, Sue Nelson and Pat Taylor. Nelson carded a birdie at the sec ond hole. Making chip-ins were Nelson and Marian Rhoads. Calabash Veterans The team of John Marcotte and Bob Erbach shot 132 to win the first flight in the Calabash Veterans Golf Association tournament last Friday at Oldc Fort. Finishing second in the total net score of twosome event was the team of Al Branham and Charlie Weber with 134. In the second night, Harry Birnie and Bill McDavit shot 124 to take first placc. Finishing one stroke back in second place was the team of Charlie Schuler and Bob Green wood. Bob Herre and Ed White won the third flight with a 131 total. They edged Bill Werner and Ed Wood on a match of cards. Art McGinn and Harold Daigneau shot 126 to win the fourth flight. Runners-up were Nils Burgeson and Jim Galvin with 129. The Calabash Veterans will play this Triday at Olde Fort. Show time is 8 a.m. for the four-man team event. Sea Trail Ladies Carole Patridge birdied the sec ond and ninth holes and shot net 38 to win the first flight in the Sea Trail Ladies Golf Association tournament last Tuesday on the Byrd course. Golfers counted scores on odd numbered holes on the front nine and even-numbered holes on the back nine. Finishing second in the top flight was Carolyn Graves with net 39. In the second flight, Birgit Carpenter, Martie Tittle and Eva Ba ham tied for first place with scores of 38. Phyllis Manfred led the way in the third flight with a 32. Sylvia Hanson was second with 37, and Ix)is Pike, Irene Jones. Kitty Billiar, Marge Stokes and Nancy Mehne tied for third with 38. Top finishers in the fourth flight included Marge Gallop with net 33, Pat Burkart with 37 and Flo Ruff with 40. Tied for fourth with scores of 41 were Carol Peters and Maggie Crockett. Carding birdies were Manfred at the seventh hole and Graves at the 18th. Brierwood Men The team of Jim Crosby, Neal McCall and Emile Vrydaghs shot Golfing Action 189 to win the Brierwood Men's Golf Association tournament last Thursday. Teams counted the three low net scores on each hole. The winners used a blind draw for their fourth score and finished 27 strokes under par. Finishing one shot back in second place was the team of Jim Bryant, Dick Anzelone, Bill Goldsberry and a blind draw. Morris Hall, Gene Cordisco, Jim Roach and a blind draw placed third with 194. On April 11, the team of Bill Pingo, Burley Athan, Rick Rickbeil and Bob Sterner shot 112 to win a two best ball event at Brierwood. Finishing second with 113 was the foursome of Mike Prokop, Jim Roach, Jerry Wolff and Matt Mon aghan. Carolina Shores Ladies Alice Abbene, Dottic Russo, Mary Johnson and Blanche Johnson shot 102 to win the Carolina Shores Ladies Golf Association tournament last Thursday. Teams counted one low net on par 5s, two low nets on par 4s and three low nets on par 3s. Finishing second with 104 was the team of Pat Reardon, Ginnie Derrickson, Evelyn Juskis and Grace Thorpe. Lynn Jerr had the overall low gross with 82. Doerthe Needham had low putts with 28. Derrickson chipped in for birdie at the 15th hole. Flo Warren made birdie at the second hole. Lockwood Shootout TWo teams finished at plus 5'A and tied for first place in the shootout last Wednesday at Lockwood Golf Links. Steve Carter and Bill Montross tied with the team of Leo Welez and Grady Hanks. Bill Pittman finished at plus 4'A and was the top individual on a non winning team. Brierwood Scramble Roy Havenga, Jo Patterson, Ned Dye and Andy Micali shot 32 to win the nine-hole mixed scramble last Wednesday at Brierwood. Two teams tied for second place with scores of 33. On a draw of cards, second place went to the team of Sarah McCullough, Jerry Lula, Irene Bryant and a blind draw. Ruth's Renegades Karen Mugridge shot net 30.5 to win the Ruth's Renegades tourna ment last week at Bay Tree. Golfers counted scores on holes starting with the letters "T' and "F." Evelyn Fitzgerald finished second with 34.5, and Mary Elliott was third with 35.5. Elizabeth Carter and Mugridge West Grabs First Place In Waccamaw Golf Race West Brunswick took over sole possession of first place in the Waccamaw Conference high school golf standings Monday with a siz zling team score of 302 at Land O' Lakes Golf Club near Whiteville. Jeremy Grainger fired an even par 72 to lead the Trojans. Todd Wilson and Juana Jaramillo posted rounds of 75 for West Brunswick, which entered the match tied for first with South Brunswick. The Cougars, led by Jason Shew's 78 and Mike Kennedy's 79, placed second Monday with a team score of 317. West Brunswick leads South Brunswick by 15 strokes heading in to the final conference match of the season next Monday at Bald Head Island. Other scores Monday were as fol lows: Whiteville. 342; West Colum bus, 352; Pender. 361; and Hast Columbus, 373. South Columbus had one golfer disqualified for hitting a practice shot during the match. As a result, the Stallions did not have enough players to post a team score. In a makeup match last Wedne sday at Fox Squirrel Country Club, South Brunswick took first with a team score of 324. Kevin McKei than, Kennedy and Jeremy May each posted rounds of 80 to lead the Cougars. South Columbus finished second with 3S3 and was followed by Pender with 361, Whiteville with 373, West Columbus with 380 and East Columbus with 435. West Brunswick did not play, but it did not affect the overall standings. In last Monday's match at Brick landing Plantation, South Bruns wick led the pack with a score of 324. West Brunswick was second with 333, followed by Whiteville with 358, South Columbus with 368, Pender with 371, East Columbus with 413 and West Columbus with 424. The captain's choice tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, and lunch will be served at 2 p.m. after all of the teams have fin ished play. The entry fee of $200 per foursome will cover golf and cart fees, re freshments, continental breakfast and lunch, goody bag and prizes to win ners and runners-up in each division. In addition to team prizes, winners of the closest-to-the-pin competi tion on each par 3 hole will receive a small color television. Hole-in-one prizes will include a cellular telephone, an airline trip for two to anywhere in the continental United States, a 1994 Buick and a five-day vacation for two to Sandestin, Fla. Other tournament features will include an auction and a 50-50 draw ing following the tournament. Extra tickets to the lunch and auction may be purchased for $5 each.
