Pageant held March 26.
Nicole Maxwell was crowned
overall queen, w inning in the best
portfolio, most photogenic and best
talent competitions in her division.
She is the daughter of Shelia
Maxwell of Leland.
Winner in the Wee Miss division
was Casey Richardson, daughter of
Ronald and Tanna Richardson of
Bolivia.
Little Miss is Erica Ratcliffc.
daughter of Darryl Ratcliffc and
Shelby Rivcnbark of Bolivia.
Tiny Miss is Randa Stanley,
daughter of Randy and Wanda
Stanley of Shallottc. She also won
most photogenic and best portfolio
in her division.
Teen Miss is Shannon Smith,

Three Win State Awards
In Women's Club Festival
Three students placcd in state
competition at the N.C. Federation
of Women's Clubs State Student Art
Festival held March 26 in Winston
Salem.
West Brunswick High School ju
nior Rachel Swain won first place
for nonfiction literature, Grades 11
12. for an article entitled, "A Man's
Gotta Do What a Man's Gotta Do."
She received a blue ribbon and a
check for $50.
Heather Hilton, WBHS sopho
more, won first place in the state for
sewing and modeling a three-piece
suit. She received a blue ribbon and
check for $100.
Lolita Bryant, Shallotte Middle
School eighth-grader, won second
place for fiction. Grades 7-8, for her
article "Blood is Thicker Than
Water."
Agency Receives Funding
For New Halfway House
Southeastern Center for Mental
Health. Developmental Disabilities
and Substance Abuse Services has
been awarded $26<),(KX) in funding
for a proposal to provide supervised
living services to substance-abusing
women with dependent children.
The center provides services to
residents of Brunswick. New
Hanover and Pender counties. The
funds are from the N.C. Department
of Human Resources, Division of
Mental Health, Developmental
Disabilities and Substance Abuse
Services.
The award will be contracted to
SENCland Alumni Association to
open and operate a residential half
way house, probably in Wilmington,

The boards of directors of both
Southeastern Center and SENCland
voted unanimously to name the new
facility "Kelly House" in honor of
Mary C. Kelly, acting substance
abuse director at Southeastern and
one of the founders of SENCland.
Kelly has been involved in develop
ing resources for people with sub
stance abuse problems in the tri
county area for more than 20 years.

Director Donna Byrd said the
event was a "great success, with the
help of the businesses in Brunswick
County who helped sponsor the
pageant."

Media Day as part of National
Library Week celebration.
Brunswick County Commissioner
Jerry Jones visited Shallottc Middle
School to see how students there use
technology in the research process.
Traccy Smith demonstrated using
the encyclopedia on CD-ROM, or
compact disc, read-only memory,
showing how photographs, maps,
charts, tables, illustrations, school
and animation enhance the text by
providing alternative ways to pre
sent information.
Tracie Hewett showed how stu
dents use "catalog search," the card
catalog on computer, to see what
materials are available and how to
locate them.
Wesley Hickman used "Magazine
Article Summaries" CD-ROM to
demonstrate how locating cutrent in
formation in periodicals is a valu
able research technique.
