C. Senate Incumbent state Senator R.C. Soles Jr. of Tabor City is seeking re-election to a 10th term as senator and his 14th term in the North Carolina legislature. Challenging him is Ron Taylor of Elizabethtown and Holden Beach, a former state representative. No Republican is seeking the seat, so the primary determines who will serve the district. The ISth District includes all of Brunswick and Columbus counties, all of Bladen County except Hollow and White Oak precincts, and Wilmington precincts No. 4 and 5 in New Hanover County. These are the candidates' responses to question naires submitted bv I he Brunswick Beacon. 18TH DISTRICT N.C. SENATE R.C. SOLES JR. Age: 59 Occupation: Attorney Education: Tabor City High School; B.S. Wake Forest University. 1956; University of North Carolina School of Law, J.D. 1959 Previous offices: N.C. Senate, nine terms, 1977-present; N.C. House of Representatives, four terms. 1969-77 Related experience: 26 years of legislative service Want to accomplish: During my 26 years in the legislature I SOLES have served as chairman of the com mittees on health, local government, state government and judiciary. I now serve as deputy president pro tem pore of the Senate, which is the second highest office in the Senate. I believe that my experience and position that I now hold enables me to represent the ISth Senatorial District extremely well. 1 plan to continue to work hard in the areas of education and economic development. We need to pay particular attention to the needs of our com mercial fishermen in Brunswick County. We also need to enact legislation that will protect our environment and prevent large mining operations that will destroy the envi ronment and quality of life in Brunswick County. RON TAYLOR Age: 41 Occupation: president, Taylor Manufacturing, Inc. Education: East Carolina University, B.S., 1974 Previous offices: N.C. House of Representatives, 1977-19X2; N.C. State Ports Authority, 1979 1982 Related experience: manage ment of a diversified manufactur ing concern, selling products that can be used by people around the world Wants to accomplish: As a husband and father, worker and em ployer, I believe I bring to the office of State Senator a better understanding of the needs of the 18th District. I am very concerned about the way Constitutional rights have been eroded in areas within my district. A major goal of my tenure as senator will be to restore the right of every citizen to control their own destiny. I would actively sponsor legislation to abolish all systems of ap pointing, rather than electing, public officials who gov ern and who allocate and spend taxpayer dollars. I am also disturbed by proposals and actions that will ultimately undermine our already endangered coastal area. In these two. as well as other instances, 1 see the old political machine as the real culprit. I be lieve we need to totally review the manner in which things come to pass in our district and return to gover nance that is fair for all residents. My standard operat ing procedure as senator will be to provide onc-on-onc dialogue with those who have elected me, so I can ad dress the needs of all residents, rather than a chosen few. I will be accessible to my constituents. Further. I have not, in this campaign nor at any oth er time, taken donations from political action commit tees. I did not take such funds from the NCAE recently when they endorsed me over the incumbent. I welcome the assistance of the NCAE membership and other groups who support my candidacy; however, I believe 1 can represent ail residents of my district only by re maining free from such entanglements. ggnnmmnnmimniiiiiBm BRUNSWICK COUNTY DEMOCRATS Free Catfish Fry and Country Style Buffet Sunday, May 1, 1:00 P.
