The certificate was based on four points: ? he unique care needs of termi nally ill patients for care focusing on the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of the patient and his/her family; ? financial efficiency of care, in that hospice care focuses on the re lief of pain rather than high-tech, ex pensive methods; ? respite for the family when caregiving at home becomes diffi cult; and ? filling the gap between home and hospital. For many families, the hospice fa cility would provide care and ser vices for patients whose death is im minent, when home care is not feasi ble. "The community needs a facili ty where persons like these could go to die with human dignity while re ceiving quality care and attention," said LCF Hospice spokesman Jean Joyner. A building committee of board members, staff and volunteers has been formed, and its members are researching and visiting hospicc in patient units in California, Virginia, l^ouisiana, Washington and Georgia, as well as facilities in Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville and Lenoir. The architectural firm of Ligon Flynn has been selected to design the facility, and plans for a capital campaign are under way. LCF Hospice was founded by Dr. Daniel Gottovi in the late 1970s. The original steering committee be came the first board of directors when the organization was incorpo rated in 1978 to serve Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties.
