Through a student activity grant from the SCC Foundation, the col lege agreed to fund three 1994 awards of $150 cash, along with a plaque for the winners. This year's heroes arc single mothers trying to raise children, work and go to school. "Even though my Int in life leaves a lot to be desired, ! am making the best sf it," Sdiu Losg, s college transfer student from Ash. "Life is a real challenge for me. I take each day as it comes, and deal with it one day at a time....! believe that all the hardships we endure make us stronger people. 1 also believe that a keen sense of humor helps mc get by, too. It is also im^rtant not to forget to smile." Each of the eight entrants in the "Everyday Heroes" program submit ted a personal account of their expe rience and were judged solely on personal accomplishments in over coming hardships in attending SCC. Laughinghouse is a recent recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, given to recognize Boy Scout council vnlttBtMK for their activities and support. Laughinghouse has served on the Boy Scouts of . Council execu tive board for ten years and is on tlie Finance Task Force. He has served as Sruaswick County chair man of the Investment in Character cam paign for eight years and has been chairman of the Brunswick County Boy Scouts Golf Tournament six times. He was honored in a banquet fea turing recognition of both Eagle Scouts and volunteers from through out the Cape Fear Council.
