The West Brunswick boys track and field team suf fered its second loss of the season last Thursday as Whiteville dominated a five-team meet on its home track. The Wolfpack, led by Terry McCray with first-place finishes in the high jump, 1 10-meter nurdies and 300 meter hurdles, racked up 213 points for the easy win. West Brunswick (17-2) took second place with 97 points. West Columbus was third with 93 and was fol lowed by Fairmont with nine and Pender with one. The Trojans gat wins from Timmy Vaught in the 800-meter ar.d 1600- meter runs and Phillip Johnson in the shot put. The Waccamaw Conference boys' and girls' track and field championships were scheduled Wednesday at Whiteville. The eastern regions1 meet will be Mav 14 at Wilson. West Brunswick's boys and North Brunswick's girls were living it up after capturing county track and field championships at South Brunswick. North's girls, who had never be fore won a county track title, cele brated their victory with the hip "Whomp There It Is" chant. West Brunswick's boys, who had not won a track championship since 1986. countered with they're own "Ham" cheer, which nobody quite understood but seemed to enjoy nonetheless. Both teams hoisted their trophies high overhead as they made victory laps around the oval. The only thing missing from the celebration was a few cases of alcohoi-free champagne. Several football players made key contributions to West Snsgswsck *c county track title, including senior William Stanley who took first place in the triple jump, 100-meter dash ami 200-meter dash. The Trojans also got first-place finishes from Phillip Johnson in the shot put and discus, Timmy Vaught in the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs, Derek Frink in the high jump and Reggie Frink in the 300-meter hurdles. Bass, Stanley, Reggie Frink and Steve Holmes teamed up to give West Brunswick a win in the 400 meter relay. Coach Wes Shoemaker's Trojans (14-1) scored 98 poin' ; to wis their first county track title in eight years. North Brunswick, the three-time de fending ci tamp ion, placed second with 63 and South finished third with 23. North's boys managed to stay close by winning three out of four relay races and getting first-place finishes from Joe Crowdcr in both the pole vault and 400-meter run. North Brunswick's girls fared bet ter than the hoys, racking up 100 points as they improved their season record to 24-2. South finished sec ond with SI, and West took third with 19. Coach Garry Bishop's Lady Scor pions were ieo by Crystal Corbett with victories in the triple jump, long jump and 300-meter hurdles. Senior sprinter Valerie Smith took first in the 100 and 200. Other event winners for North Brunswick included Vbnetta Alston in the high jump. Kerri Cox in the 400-meter run, Dilya Johnson in the shot put and L'Kisha Pretty in the 100-meter hurdles.
