Sam Goodson, a fifth-grade stu

poster contest sponsored by
Brunswick County Soil and Water
Conservation to promote conserva
tion of natural resources.
His poster will go on to regional
competition in Raleigh.

New Trooper
Artis Ix'vern Hill of Lcland is one
of 5 1 new troopers graduated Friday
from the ^Ist liiisic School of the
N.C. State Highway Patrol.
He was sworn in during cere
monies at the Patrol Training Center
in Gamer and was scheduled to re
port for duty May 16. He has been
assigned to Troop B-i. Favettcviiie.
The new troopers have completed
a rigorous 25-week training program
designed to prepare them for the
challenges they will face on the
state's highways, said Thurman B.
Hampton, state secretary of Crime
Control and Public Safety, of which
the Highway Patrol is a division.
They mastered 1.0WJ hours of in
struction in 72 law enforcement sub
jects. including accident investiga
tion and criminal and constitutional
law. firearms training and precision
driving.
Troopers continue their education
throughout their careers with on-the
job training and annual in-service
schools, Hampton added.

been named a U.S. National Honor
Roll Award winner.
He will appear in the U.S.
Achievement Academy's yearbook,
published nationally.
