MEN'S CHURCH LEAGUE New Britton Beats Soldier Bay To Remain On Top New Britton beat Soldier Bay 22 12 last Friday night at Waccamaw Park to remain undefeated in the Brunswick County Men's Church Softball League. New Britton also knocked off Dixon Chapel 29-0 last Tuesday and led the B Division with a record of 6-0 heading into Tuesday's games. Jennies Branch took a 14-9 win over ShaHnttr Firs! last Tuesday and posted a 3-2 win over Supply Baptist Thursday. In other games S?m week. Entry deadlines vary for the 33 athletic events offered at Stale Games. The earliest deadline is May 23 for chcerleading and gymnastics. Participants in other events can wait at late as mid-June to register. Any North Carolina resident who has lived in the state at least 30 days prior to the entry deadline is eligible to competc. All participants must be amateurs ar.d abide by eligibility rules governing their sport. Adult Soccer: 1-800-277-8763. iviea's Softball: Class A Mod Best Receives Distinguished Service Award At Meeting Former Brunswick County Schools Athletic Director Nelson Best re ceived the N.C High School Athletic Association Distinguished Service Award during the group's annual meeting last Thursday in Chapel Hill. Best served as athletic director for nearly IS years and retired Jan. 31, one month after the Brunswick County Board of Education decided to eliminate his position effective June 30. He served a combined 10 years as principal of Leland and North Brunswick high schools before moving to the central office in 1979. Best also taught history, science, physical education and health and coached boys* and girls' hssketbal!, baseball, track, football and tennis. As athletic director, Best has said his greatest accomplishments were acquiring county supplements for all coaches and expanding athletic pro grams at the middle and high schools. The NCHSAA Distinguished Service Award has been presented for nine years, and Best was one of 27 award recipients this year, Stnink said. Gospel Center, Mt. Gospel Center improved its sea son record to 5-0 with a 17-2 whip ping of Faith "B" Saturday night at Smithville Park in Southport. Mt. Olive also ran its mark to 5-0 Saturday with a 24-4 victory over Southport "B" at Lock wood Folly Park in Supply. Mt. Olive knocked off Lebanon 32-8 last Tuesday. Gospel Center's game Tuesday agsin^t Southport "B" was rained out and will be re scheduled. In other league action Saturday, Faith "A" improved its record to 4-1 with a 42-6 thrashing of Mill Creek. Faith "A" also posted a 13-8 win over Mt. Pisgah last Tuesday. Also Saturday. Southport "A" crushed Bolivia 13-3, Shell Point got past Ixbanon 12-10, Supply knocked off Calvary 13-10, Mt. Cougars Fail To Gators; Earn Split With Vikirias South Brunswick managed only three hits in 3-1 high school baseball loss to the East Columbus Gators Monday night at Boiling Spring Lakes. East Columbus pitcher John Jun ious shut down the Cougars, striking out 10 batters. South's Jcrrv Gal loway suffered the lews for the Cougars, allowing five hits and issu ing 10 walks.
