BUSINESS BRIEFS Parker Named Manager Of Soufhport NationsBank Vernon L. Parker is manager of' the new South port NationsBank banking center, scheduled to cele brate its grand opening next week. Parker joined NationsBank in 1977 as an adjuster in Wallace. He moved to Hendersonville in 1981 as an officer and branch manager He was promoted to assistant vice presi dent in 1985 and moved to Shallotte as a branch manager. He is a member of the Volunteer and Information Center, and is a past president of the American Heart Association in Brunswick County and a past board member of Hope Harbor Home. A Duplin County native. Parker graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School. He is the son of Evelyn Parker White of Clinton and the late Marvin H. Parker. A ribbon-cutting reception for the new facility will be sponsored by the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce May 19 from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Five $100 bills making up the ribbon will be donated to five Brunswick County schools in Southport. In addition, the bank will give away $ I .(XX) in a drawing to be held May 20 at 6 p.m. Bank visitors may register throughout the week. The Southport banking center, which opened April 18, is the first NationsBank office in Southport. It also brings the first automated teller machine to Southport. Milliken On SeosidePone/ Buddy Milliken, owner of The Milliken Company, served as a guest panelist April 23 at a conference in Seaside, Fla.. called "Making Honda Home: Lessons From Seaside." Funded by the Honda Humanities Council, the series of public pro grams emphasized the role of the humanities in examining models for community growth and small town revival. Milliken 's panel discussed 'Triplets: Seaside. Seagrove Sc. Grayton As Answer To Small Town Revival." Speakers looked at small town patterns, how tourism effects pic turesque resort towns that draw sea sonal and year-round residents, and how small communities in close proximity can retain their own iden tities while fostering cooperation. Businesses, Industries To Be Recognized With Safety Awards Several local businesses and in dustries were to be recognized for their safety records at a May 1 1 ban quet co-sponsored by the N.C. De partmcnt of Labor and the Greater Wilmington Chamber cf Commerce. Carolina Power and Light's Brunswick Nuclcar Plant in South Opens port was to be honored for having compiled 10 million employee hours without any disabling injuries. The labor department presents safety awards annually to firms with 10 or more employees which had no on-the-job fatalities. UP TO SI .700 PER HOUSE Housing Agency Accepting Weatherization Applications The Brunswick County Public Housing Agency is accepting appli cations for weatherization assis tance. Up to SI, 700 per house is avail able for purchasing and installing such items as weather-stnpptng. caulking, glazing, water heater cov ers, insulation, exterior doors, glass panes and windows, and other items related to energy conservation. The agency is working on a $101,500 grant to help weatherize 54 homes. The weatherization assis tance program is administered by the local agency in cooperation with the N.C. Energy Division with funds granted by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is designed to provide free help to elderly, disabled and low-in come Brunswick Countians who qualify. Applications arc being taken at the agency's office in the Brunswick County Government Complex.
