Volunteers With Sundial
Union Elementary School hosts a
reception every spring and fall for
the volunteers who help educate stu
dents throughout the school year.
This spring. Union decided to do
something different.

Principal Zelphia Grissett said dur
ing a ceremony last Thursday.

reminder of the time and effort made
by school volunteers and the differ
ence they make in the lives of chil
dren.
"I am convinced that the volun

The sun dial will be part of an
outdoor amphitheater being built in
the courtyard.
Teddy Altreuter of Calabash
thanked school officials for giving
community residents the opportunity
to volunteer.
"Wc love doing this. I haven't met
a volunteer yet that doesn't feel re
paid 100-fold by the students we
help," Altreuter said.
"We think all of you children are
t..c most important people in this
school and we're happy to be help
ing you," she said to the hundreds of
kids gathered around the new out
door stage.
Brunswick County Schools Sup
erintendent Ralph Johnston said the
school must have high expectations
for children and teach strong ethics,
morals and values.
"There must be people in the
community that are caring, loving,
guiding and yes, disciplining,"
Johnston said.
"What we are here is a communi
ty... It is as a community working to
gether that we truly educate," he
added.
After the dedication ceremony,
entertainment was provided by
"Harmony." the West Brunswick
High School Show Choir.

hearts will beat faster as Shallotte
Middle School eighth graders com
pete in the final rounds of the Uth
annual North Carolina History Bowl
on Monday, May 23.
Four-student teams representing
Shallotte Middle and seven other
schools will face off in single elimi
nation rounds from 9 a.m. to 5 D.m.
in Raleigh.
The bowl is the culmination of
months spent studying North Caro
lina history and successfully com
peting in regional bowls sponsored
by state historic sites earlier this
year.

School won the Brunswick Town
State Historic Site Regional History
Bowl to advance to the state contest.
Other schools competing in the
state bowl are Arendell Parrott
Academy, Kinston; Carmel Middle

School, Angier; Mille.-s Creek Inter
mediate School. Wilkes County;
Neal Middle School, Durham;

State Archives Auditorium at 109

Raleigh and will be open to the pub

Students will arrive May 22 for a

headquarters of the United Daugh
ters of the Confederacy (UDC).

Historic Sites Section of the De
partment of Cultural Resources, and

brated Nations! Library Week with s
student-written iimerick competi
tion.
Their entries were called "piger
icks," because each had to be about
a pig. First, second and third place
awards were presented in each class.
John Stanley, a sixth grade stu
dent, wrote this "pigerick." which
won third place: "There was a pig
from New York, Who was going to
be cut up for pork. He ran away the
next day. And was last seen headed
toward the bay. He wanted to dodge
the knife and fork."
