Is Sformwater Management MORE LETTERS Argument Just mt Another ' Red Herring'? To the editor: Carolina Shores, the beautiful res idential community in does have a sewer system. They ?U? have a series of open ditches that by the laws of physics and the grace of God allows the stormwater to run off and prevents the community from flooding. The prevention of uuGuiru ? the Ofljy numiw ann use for these stormwater runoff ditches. This is not a stormwater runoff ? 3yS?Caaat mil lS II wiuu the environmental experts have in mind for control of this source of pollution. What the experts, I think, have in mind, at a minimum, is retention of stormwater within a community. From that point, testing for polluting bacteria and treatment would be re quired before release of the storm water. If this is the case, then a communi ty such as Carolina Shores may not have the resources nor the space to handle retention, testing and treat ment of stormwater. It is conceivable that a South Brunswick Stcmwater Authority may have to be established to share resources for this task. Homeowners in Carolina Shores might even be required to dike their property, install gutters and down spouts and run their sionuwatcii ioio a septic tank type system with un derground drainage fields to mini mize the stormwater requiring reten tion and treatment. Of course, this is supposition. W? don't know what will be required to eliminate stormwater as a source of pollution. That is why this whole ef fort on the part of those opposing the sewer system is so utterly ridicu lous. Stormwater. Uncontrolled growth. Where are the other red herrings? Loftin Winston-Salem Pieose Siow Down To the editor: This letter is directed at the per son driving a new metallic blue pickup on High Meadows Road Sunday, May IS, at 8 p.m.: 'As were getting ready to lake our children to get ice cream. They were waiting outside playing w.'.h the I, four-month-old puppy "Snuggle." They had only taken their eyes off him 2 short v.'fsilc. Then tragedy struck. We heard our 12-year-old daughter screaming. My heart pounded as I ran for the door fearing our 9-year-old son had been hit by a vehicle, even though we have instilled in both of them not to play near the road. Running out the door, I saw our son running to the ditch. Their beloved Snuggle had been hit by you, unfeelingly. After all, it wasn't like he had darted across in front of you. He was just standing there. You hit him with such n force you threw him 20 feet. Our son picked him up out of the ditch to bring him to me with hope in his eyes. Unfortunately, all I could do was pet him as he laid mo tionless, taking his last few breaths X BOOKWORM Remember Our /tn a ?rrv . U IUU11J /opening at 3004 Holden Beach Road. Peggy Earwood Shallotte History Rcpcufi To the editor. Who says history does not repeat itseif? A few days ago we read that Baid Head Island would again be seeking a gift of government funds to repair their "public ' beach. Yet it was only three years ago that the federal gov ernment gave them the sum of S450.000 for the same purpose. They use the term "public" beach rather loosely, knowing that access to the island is difficult and expen sive. When federal funds are granted to a state, I believe it is usual to clear them through the U.S. senators of that state. If so, the initial grant to Bald Head Island had the approval of our senators holding office in 1991. ! cite this fact in wondering where arc the voiws Ui SciuiUn Helms, Senator Faircloth and. yes, our state representative.
