Two Injured In Reported Drive-By Shooting in Navassa

vassa iate Monday night, according
to a crime report on file at the sher
iff's office Tuesday morning
Deputy Anthony Key was dis
patched at about 11:30 to investigate
a reported shooting at the corner of
Plumb Street and Water Street Ar
riving on the scene a few minutes
later, he said he found a woman
"who had obviously been shot."
The woman, link Jnw 28, cf
Conway, S.C., told Key that she had
been riding her bicycle down Plumb
Street when she was hit in the face
and torso by a blast from a shotgun.
The other victim, Bernard Hoop
er. SO, of Main Street, Leland, was
likewise wounded as he sat on a
nearby bench, according to Detec
tive Ken Messer, who has been as
signed to investigate the shooting
"Right now I'm no? sere exactly
what we have," Messer said Tues
day "I just learned about it this mor
ning. i ve omy spoken to one of the
victims. All I know is that two peo
ple got shot."
Residents of the neighborhood re
ported hearing two shotgun blasts
and other small arms fire at the time
of the incident. Messer said.
The wounds are believed to have
been inflicted by small pellets of
bird shot, he said
After the shooting, two "male
subjects" helped James to a home on
Wstcr Street aad called 911, Key's
report said. Neither man could iden
tify the assailant or the vehicle from
which the shots are alleged to have
come.
An investigation into the incident
is continuing Messer said he was
not sure about the condition of the
victims. He believes both were treat
ed and released from an area hospi
tal.

to go back inside. She did so." The
victim was injured "from blows to
the nose, mouth and eyes," the re
port said. Detective Tbm Hunter is
investigating the case.

jects had been drinking and were ar
guing about whether a child should
be allowed in the street when the 22
year-old woman got into a car and
"threw beer bottles on the ground."
The boyfriend allegedly picked up
one of the bottles and threw it at the
victim, hitting her in the leg.

Oak Drive in Whispering Heights,
Supply, returned to her home after a
two-week absence Thursday after
noon to find that someone had fired
a gunshot through the front of the
bowse. The bullet passed through the
wall and lodged in a partition be
tween the Irving room and kitchen.
There was no one home at the time
of the shooting. Deputy Cathy
Hamilton estimated the damage to
the home at S500.

Yamaha 250 four-wheeled recre
ational vehicle from outside a home
on N.C 179 in Ocean hie Beach
Saturday night The owner told
Deputy Randy Robinson that he left
the vehicle chained to a light pole

morning to find one of the dealer's
new 1994 pickup tracks sitting on

The stolen tires and wheels were
valued at $1,500.

heme after playing golf Thursday
and put his bag in the garage When
he returned to clean the dubs for a
game Saturday morning, the bag
was gone.

was stolen from a storage area be
hind a business near the Grissettown
intersection Friday night. Deputy
Michael Smith was told that the ve
hicle had been left unlocked.

Seashore Road, sometime in the past
two weeks. According to McDon

damage. The intruders cut telephone
and power lines, allowing food to
spoil in the refrigerator, hefrw? mak

and an air conditioner valued at a to
tal of $1,400. Damage was estimat
ed to be about $450.
? Someone pried open the door to
a workshop behind a home on Old
Shallotte Road and stole a chain saw
and reciprocating saw worth about
$900 last week. Deputy Bryant re
ported that the thief "appears to have
exited through a window and es
caped into the woods."
? A 1978 Mercury Zephyr was
stolen from outside the Conch Shell
Apartments on N.C 179 in Sunset
Beach Friday night. The owner said
she parked the car at about 11:30
p.m. with the keys left inside. The
next afternoon, a friend came by to

morning to find that someone pried
open a rear window and stole an air
conditioner; a microwave oven, a
wall dock and a power cord for a
cellular phone. The value of stolen
items was estimated to be about
$615.
