Four Are Chosen For ECU Program
Four Brunswick County students
arc amont 292 junior and senior high
students from the eastern half of the
state chosen to participate in a resi
dential program for young leaders at
Hast Carolina University this sum
mer.
They are Jomondre Frink, Ash;
Christopher Russ Jr., Leland; Tri
netta Bryant. Inngwnnd; Timothy
Theodore Daniels, Shallotte.
The students v.-i!! spend two
veeks at ECU as participants in the
1994 Legislators' School for Youth
leadership Development. The pro
gram, which consists of activities to
develop the students' leadership,
thinking and communication skills,
is operated by the ECU Rural
Education Institute.
A similar program for potential
leaders in western North Carolina is
being held at Western Carolina
University in Cullowhee.
Rising eighth- and ninth-grade
students attending the eastern Legis
lators' School will be on campus for
a June 19-July 1 session, and stu
dents will will be in grades 10-12
will attend a July 3-July IS session.
The students will be housed on cam
pus. All expenses are paid from
funds provided by the N.C. General
Assembly.
Both sessions consist of work
shops, field trips, outdoor adven
tures, seminars and a variety of cul
tural and recreational activities.

arc a primary focus of all Legis
lators' School sessions.
The legislators' School series
was begun to foster leadership quali
ties among the state's school-aged
youth who arc not being served by
the public schools' programs for
gifted and talented students. Most of
the students selected arc from rural
areas.
Helps With Rescue
Of Burning Ship
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class
Walter C. Volink recently participat
ed in the rescue of a burning ship
while serving aboard the guided
missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay.
Vblink is the son of Walter and
Dorthy Volink of Calabash.

Pusan. Korea, the ship and crew
helped extinguish a major fire

neighboring fire departments failed
to control a fire in its cargo contain
ers.
From the time Volink and his
shipmates took over the battle, it
took 22 hours to extinguish the blaze
with 187 sailors forming 13 fire
fighting teams. The remainder of the
ship's 350-man crew provided criti
cal support from aboard the cruiser.
Despite the challenges of bringing
the fire under control, there were no
injuries reported.
Yblink is a 1985 graduate of New
Brighton (Pa.) High School. He
joined the Navy in July 1987.

Michael D. Stokes was recently pro
moted to his present rank and report
ed for duty aboard the Coast Guard
Cutter Farallon, homcported in
Miami Beach, Fla.

Myrtle B. Stokes of Leland. He
joined the Coast Guard in August
1982.

Two Brunswick County students
were named to the dean's list for the
spring semester at Meredith College.
They are Jessica Brown Ezzell,
daughter of Mary Ezzell and Wil
liam Ezzell of Southport. and Le
nora Michelle Lewis, daughter of
Lawrence and Karen Bridger of
Long Beach. Bridger had a 4.0, or
straight A, average.
Inman Aboard Carrier

Inman of Shallotte has departed for
a six-month deployment to the
Mediterranean aboard the aircraft
carrier USS George Washington.
based in Norfolk, Va. The carrier
and its crew took part this past
weekend in the 50th anniversary
commemoration of D-Day, the
Allied invasion of Normandy, June
6, 1944.
The 1988 graduate of West
Brunswick High School joined the
U.S. Navy in 1991. He is the hus
band of Ginny Inman of Shallotte
and the son of Shelton and Martha
Inman of Ash.

Lunch will be spread at approxi
mately 1 p.m., with each family
asked to bring a covered dish dinner.

More than 200 people attended

Academic Reception June 2 to rec
ognize students for their accom
plishments and people in the com
munity for their support.
Seven students received awards
for 4.0, or straight-A, averages.
Sixteen awards were given for high
est average in subject areas. Letters
and pins went to 107 students who
stayed on the A or B honor rolls all
year.
Fred McGec presented awards to
Muucnis who had improved the most
in four academic areas. Their selec
tion was based on pre-testing and
post-testing for each area.
The winners are Trace Hopkins,
English; Devan Hewett, social stud
ies; Johnathon Fisher, math; and
Allison R. Hardee, science. Each re
ceived a $100 savings bond.
The South Brunswick Islands
Women's Club was recognized for
donating money to purchase the
awards and for assisting with serv
ing refreshments after the reception.
