Hovesamv More Pennies For Supply Supply Elementary School Principal Carolyn Williams (left) ac cepts a check for $1,000 from Nellie Sellers (right), treasurer of Supply Baptist Church, while Bobbie Sellers (center), teacher at Supply and member of the church, looks on. The school converted the church \ donation to pennies and added it to the penny box in the school office. The school's goal was to obtain $10,000 by May; so far, $7,800 has been raised toward the purchase of playground equipment. District Art Winner Aimee Duncan, rising senior at West Brunswick High School, pos es with the work which won her second place in the 7th District Congressional Arts Caucus competition. The award was presented April 29 in Robeson County by Congressman Charlie Rose. Her work will hang in Rose's Washington office for a year. Supply Spotlight Memory David Gofoith and Janet Herzog were chosen for re cognition dur ing June at Sup ply Elementary School. Gofoith is an art teacher who holds the B.F.A. degree in ait and ait GO??ni education for grades K through 12. She was grad uated from UNC-Greensboro in 1 978 and has taught sis yean is a Greensboro private school in addi tion to her three years in Brunswick County. She serves on the awards, guid ance, staff development, friendship and safe environment committees at Southport and is chairman of the Ait :\ J i Committee and Supply Yearbook Committee. She is president of Memory Homes Inc. and a member of the Brunswick County TUrtle Watch Program. She lives in Supply with her son Sean, 11. I !e izog is a first-grade teacher as sistant and was chosen for recognition for her work on the school's awards assemblies and certificates. Currently at tending Bruns wick Com munity College, HERZOG Herzog has been a teacher's assistant for seven years. She serves on the school's awards committee and is active in Sacred Heart Church in Southport, where she is youth leader, eucharis tic minister and iccter. Herzog lives in Winnabow with husband Bob and sons Chucky and Adam. She also haB a toa, Robert, who served in the Air Force in Alaska. Henry Doporfs rOf UepfuyniCWW Marine Gunnery Sgt. Kevin L. Henry recently departed for a six month deployment to the western Pacific with Marine Attack Squadron 214, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz. He is the son of Mariabelle B. and Harry W. Henry Sr. of Route 3, Supply. Detachment B of Henry's squad ron will serve in support of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is embarked among the ships of the USS Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group. Marines from Detachment B will serve in Somalia and Southwest Asia. Also, during their deployment, they are scheduled to conduct joint exercises with Kuwait, Thailand and Singapore. Henry, a 1971 graduate of Fairmont East High School of Kettering, Ohio, joined the Marine Corps in September 1975. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Richard S. Adkins recently re ported for duty aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis, homeported in Si'oooiuiu. Honors For Sisters Kcira Williams and Lauren Williams, daughters of Roger and Joyce Williams of HoMen Beach, have been named to the high school honor roli for the spring semester at Saint Mary's in Raleigh. Both students recently completed 11th grade. To be eligible for the honor roll, a student must cam at least a 3.25 grade point average on at least 14 semester hours while maintaining the status of a "student in good standing" with the school. Saint Mary's is a two-year college and four-year preparatory school for women offering liberal arts pro grams. Sally Schutte, a June graduate of West Brunswick High School in &nailotte, has been awarded a $500 perform ing arts scholar ship from Lees McRae College in Banner Elk to major in the atre arts. Schutte was selected for the award on the basis of a videotape audition of her rote in West Brunswick's spring 1993 production of "Steel Magnolias." The scholarship can be renewed each year, far a total value of $2,000, if Schutte maintains a 2.5 gradepoini average (CPA) her fresh man year and 3.0 GPA thereafter. She is the daughter of Stephen and Connie Schutte of Supply. Wilson wins oworc/ (Gloria Wilson, a Brunswick County school bus driver, has been named winner of the 1994 Tracy Lea Calhoun Memorial Award for safe driving by the N.C. Petroleum Marketers Association. Wilson has been driving with the system 13 years and has a perfect driving record, never having had an accident. Robert H. White of R.D. White and Sons Inc., Shallotte, presented the plaque June 8 on behalf of the association. The N.C. Since Calhoun died, the state has improved its selection, training and supervision of school bus driven anu iuueaied i lie 11 hourly wage in an effort to attract more competent drivers. Winner Nadia Bryant of Shallotte has been awarded a college scholarship of up to $1,000 by the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina. Bryant recently was graduated from West Brunswick High School and plans to study dermatology at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is the daugh ter of Edna and Dolpfaus Bryant. She was sponsored for the award by Coastal Insurance and Realty of Shallotte. Judging for the scholar ships is by a panel ot independent trustees. Day Weekend Ait Show Artists from the Carolinas entered their work in the juried show. Eighty-seven pieces of art were sub mitted for judging on Saturday. May 21; the display and sale followed on May 28. Work was judged by local artist V. Ryan Lauzon in four categories on the professional level and the same four on the amateur level: oils, acrylic, watercoior and mixed me dia/pastels/graphics, with fust, sec ond and third piaces ana honorable mentions in each.
