McBride, Johnson Tame Whiteville 2-0 BY DOUG R UTTER Casey McBride and Eric Johnson combined on a three-hitter as Bruns wick County Pest 68 defeated visit ing Whiteville Post 137 2-0 last Thursday in American Legion base hall. McBride and Johnson, the coun ty's high school baseball co-players of the year, recorded 1 1 strikeouts as Post 68 improved to 4- 1 in the Area II East League. Whiteville suffered its first league loss and fell to 4-1. Malrinn Ktc in 1 McBride overcame a shaky opening frame to pitch five strong innings. After walking two of the first four batters. McBride settled down and did not issue any walks the rest of the way. The right-hander yielded just two hits while striking out five. In four innings of relief, Johnson gave up one hit, walked three and fanned six. Johnson, who had one of Brunswick County's two hits in the garac. was the winning pitcher. "Tonight we played like the ball club I envisioned us being this year," Brunswick County Coach Ed Lewis said after the game. "Any time you can beat one of these top "We put pressure on them with our speed. We've got five guys in our lineup that can fly, and we used that to our advantage tonight . "?Post 68 Coach Ed Lewis v Tti 'Um 2*r>^p| three clubs it's good." Brunswick County (6-7 overall) provided the gssic's only scoring u? the seventh inning. Jeremy Child drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third when Whiteville misplayed Lewis Vaught's bunt Child raced home on a wild pitch by Post 137 starter Brian Mazur, and the speedy Vaught went from first to third on the play. Michael Johnson then drove in Vaught with a sacrifice fly to left field to give Post 68 a 2-0 lead. Whiteville's biggest threat came in the top of the ninth inning when Jamie Townshend doubled and Eric Johnson issued consecutive walks to load the bases with one out. Post 137's Joe High poked a lazy fly ball to right that Vaught tracked down and snared near the foul line. TuwuSuCDu tagged up ? 1 third base, but Vaught fired a one-hopper to home plate. Catcher Randy Cole man fielded the throw and put the tag on Townshend for the game's fi nal out. "We've had five or six assists from our outfield this year," Coach Lewis said. "It was a tremendous play. He was set up right and made a tremendous play. I was happy for Lewis." Whiteville (5-3 overall) stranded runners at third base in the first and fourth innings and left a total of sev en men on base. Due to recent tenderness in his right arm, the pitching start was Mc Brule's first since the high school playoffs. Lewis said McBride took IS days off before working out on the mound. Against Whiteville, Mc Bride was taken out after reaching a pre -determined, 80-pitch limit. "Casey did well for his first start. He's a real competitor, and he really did better than I expected him to," Lewis said. "Eric came on and did a tremendous job. You can't say enough." /Ugaavt haw running by Child and Vaught led to both of Brunswick County's runs. "We put pressure on them with our speed," Lewis admitted. "We've got five guys in our lineup that can fly, and we used that to our advan tage tonight" Mazur suffered the loss for Post 137, giving up two runs on two hits in 6'A innings. The lefty walked eight batters and struck out nine. Whiteville's High did no* give up any hits and struck out two batters in 15< innings of relief. "This is one we figured for a split and we got a sweep," Post 68 Coach Ed Lewis said after his club defeated Whiteville for the second time in three days. "Now we've got to press even harder.'* Using a combination of fastballs, curves and change-ups, Johnson yielded one run and eight hits in Cighi-pmS iuuiligs while walking five and striking out four. "He kept their hitters off balance and battled out of some very tough situations,'' Lewis said as Post 68 improved to 6-1 in the Area II East League and 9-8 overall. Post 68 scored two runs in the fourth inning and the lead held up until the bottom of the ninth, when Johnson walked the first two batters before being relieved by Casey McBride. Pinch runner Greg Slater stole third base, and Phillip Smith swiped second to put the tying runs in scor ing position with no outs. A wild pitch by McBride allowed Slater to score and Smith to advance to third, but McBride showed his toughness by striking out Brian Mazur for the first out. Whiisvilits Jamie Tuwnshend then hit a sharp grounder to second base, which John Sweeney fielded and fired home. Smith plowed into Post 68 catcher Jeremy Sullivan, but he held on for the second out. McBridc then got Anthony Prid gen to ground back to the mound for the game's final out. Brunswick County scored both of its runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Sullivan and Sweeney ? the c.ghi asd sssc hitters. Demetrius Bell walked and scored on Sullivan's sharp grounder off shortstop Mark Harri tan's glove. Jerry Galloway, who blasted a ground-rule double to center field, came home on Sweeney's line single to left. Coach Lewis praised the play of Sullivan, who was making his first stan at catcher and made the game's biggest defensive play in the ninth. "He's a tough little knot. He's probably the next Jared McGee in Brunswick County," said Lewis, re ferring to the former North Bruns wick High School and Puai 68 star. Brunswick County missed several opportunities to pull away from Post 137, leaving the bases loaded twice. "We've really got to work on that. Those are just kinks we've got to work out," Lewis said. "When you play good teams you'll uniy gci about three runs at them and you need to capitalize. You also need a couple good plays in the outfield and infield and we were fortunate to get those." Whiteville Post 137 fell to 4-2 in the league and 5-4 overall. Starter John Junious went 4K innings, yield ing six hits, walking three and strik ing out two. Pndgen pitched 4V4 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out two and did not give up any hits.
