FISHING REPORT Teens Highlight Big Week At Piers BY DOUG RUTTER Two teen-agers highlighted a fan tastic week of pier fishing in the South Brunswick Islands, pulling in a huge cobia and a mammoth king mackerel as more experienced an glers looked on. Billy Green of Supply landed a (>8-pound cobia at Holden Beach Fishing Pier on Sunday, according to manager Gil Bass. Last week at Sunset Beach rishing Flci. 15-year-oid Kyie baton of Coshockton. Bass said anglers caught lots of Spanish mack erel and flounder last week, along with some blues, whiting and spots. Linda Burns of Waxhaw landed a 28-pound king Sunday. On Saturday. Mike Elks pulled in a 14-pounder and a 20-pounder. At Ocean Isle Beach Fishing Pier, fishermen caught flounder, blues and shecpsh>*ad last week, said man ager Milton Williams. "They've been catching some nice speckled trout on live shrimp," he added. "Fishing overall is still pretty good." Captain Pete's Seafood "Right now it seems like every thing's just right," said Jesse Hayes of Captain Pete's Seafood at Holden Beach. Anglers who ventured offshore last week found lots of large dolphin and king mackerel, he said. Fishermen are catching big Spanish mackerel in the breakers and spots and pinfish in Ocean Isle's canals. Sea Mist Camping Resort "Fishing's picking up," said Nellie Harrell of Sea Mist Camping Resort at Brick Landing. "We've had some nice fish caught this week." Campers caught mostly speckled trout, flounder, spots and Virginia mullet, Harrell reported. On June 13, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Oliver of Marion landed an 8-foot, 150-pound hammerhead shark. Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Opened To Shrimp Trawls The Atlantic Intracoastal Water way from Southport to the South Carolina state line was re-opened to shrimp and crab trawling Monday following an eight-day closure. The waterway, along with parts of Bonaparte Creek and Cape Fear River, had been closed June 12 to protect small brown shrimp in those areas. The N.C. Division of Marine Fis heries re-opened the waterway and Bonaparte Creek on Monday. Also opened were parts of Shallotte River, Calabash River, Jinks Creek and the CP&L Bypass Channel near Southport. Cape Fear Fishing Tourney July 14-17 To Benefit Easter Seal Society Of N.C. The Cape Fear Bluewater Fishing Club is sponsoring an offshore fish ing tournament July 14-17 for the benefit of the Easter Seal Society of North Carolina. Tuna, dolphin and wahoo will be the eligible species for the Easter Seals Shootout held out of Carolina Inlet Marina in Wilmington. Each uuai wiii be aiiowcti to fish two of the three days. The prize for the largest fish will be $3,500 cash.
