"! think it's perfectly disgraceful," said trusts* Margaret Harper. "It's a disgusting thing that has happened. I believe we've sunk to mighty low depths when something like this happens in Brunswick County. "Gene Pinkerton has been a good board member," she said. "He's the one who's responsible for getting us the money to start this library sys tem. It's pure politics and I don't like it. He's been a fine member. And that comes from a good Democrat to a good Republican." Harper made her comments im mediately before the library board's regular monthly meeting was called to order Monday night. She asked that the remarks not be included in the board's official minutes. The statements also came before the arrival of fellow library trustee Don Warren, the chairman of the county commissioners who nomi nated former Democratic Party leader William A. Stanley Jr. to take Pinkerton's at-large sea? on the li brary board last month. Pinkerton was nominated for re appointment by Commissioner Jerry Jones and supported by fellow Republican Donald Shaw. Stanley won the seat with Democrats Tom Rabon and Wayland Vereen joining Warren in a party-line vote to oust the Republican from his library board seat. It was Pinkerton, as a commis sioncr in 1992. who suggested that the county use SI. 5 million in re serve money to start a four-branch library system. As the library board's first chairman, Pinkerton headed the committee that began construction of two new libraries at Oak Island and Lei and and the reno vation of the Shallotte and Southport brwHchw Pinkerton also recommended the creation of the nine-member board of trustees to oversee the library sys tem. Members of the original panel were selected as representatives of all areas of the county for their pre vious involvement in libraries. Three of the library board's char ter members were from Shallotte. while two resided in Southport. One trustee each was selected from Lcland, Yaupon Beach, Winnabow and Boiling Spring Lakes. Harper accused the Democrat commissioners of upsetting that geo graphical balance in the name of po litical favoritism. "Not only are we losing a good member but we end up with five members from Shallotte." Harper said. "It doesn't represent the whole county." Library board Chairman Don ERgert and members Warren, Stanl ey, Marie Harrison and Pearl Stanley all reside in or near the Shallotte area. Pinkerton was attending his last mee'ing as a library board member Monday night and did not respond to Harper's comments. But he ap parently expected the Democrat commissioners to replace him. At the library board's May meet ing, Pinkerton asked his fellow trustees not to suggest his name to the commissioners for re-appoint mcnt along with Harrison and Ralph Frazicr of Winnabow. At the urging of other board members, Pinkerton agreed to serve if re-named to the board, but he remarked that "politics being what they are, I may not be wanted." Harrison and Frazier were unani rrwMid v r??.T?rwv^int<*H Hurino j ? -rr*"* o same commissioners meeting at which Pinkerton was replaced. In other library board business Monday night, the trustees voted unanimously to re-name the West Brunswick Library in Shallotte. It will be called "The Rourk Branch of the Brunswick County Library" in honor of the late Dr. Malcolm Henderson Rourk and his wife Marie Foscue Rourk. The couple donated the land for the library and Mrs. Rourk served the old library board as an active member and fund raiser for many years. The board also voted to elect new officers. Anne Hines of Yaupon Beach was named chairman, while Frazier was selected to be vice-chair. Library Director Maurice Tkte will continue her duties as secretary to the board.
