JOE PHILLIP VERZAAL SR. Joe Phillip Verzaal Sr. of Mount Misery Road. Leland, died June 23 at his home. He was born in Boskoop, Net herlands, on Sept. 27, 1901, the son of the late Hadriaar. and Sophia Vybel Verzaal, and was preceded in death on Nov. 17, 1990, by his wife of 64 years, Mrs. Louise Elizabeth Cordes Verzaal. Mr. Verzaal was owner of Joe's Aquarium in for more than 52 years. Surviving ate his daughter, Louise V. Joyner of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sons Joe Phillip Verzaal Jr. and wife Roma of Rocky Point, Adrian R. Verzaal and wife Arlene of Del ray Beach. Fla., and James Edward Verzaal and wife Nora, with whom Mr. Verzaal made his home. In addi tion he had 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gerard Verzaal and wife Mary Ann of Delrav Beach. Fla., and Marion Verzaal and wife Arlene of Wilm ington; two sisters, Sophia Postma and husband Gilbert of Wilmington and Rika Heemskcrk and husband John of Needham. Mass. Funeral services were held June 25 in Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by the Rev. David Stratton. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park. ILA JANE CLIFTON BATTEN ila jane Clifton Batten, 78, of i Whiteville, died June 22 at Duke University Medical Center. Mrs. Batten was the daughter of the late William Chester and Carrie Ann Sasser Clifton. She was a member of the Hallsboio Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband. Luther I C. Batten of Whiteville; daughters I Sally Verlene Batten of Lake & Waccamaw and Carolyn Jane Colon ? of Portsmouth, Va.; sons Virgil ?Batten and David James Batten, ?both of Holden Beach; sister Gladys S f Fisher of Whiteville; brother Walter * Clifton of Virginia Bcach, Va.; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grand children. Funeral services were held June 25 at the Hallsboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Stines and Mike Madding. Burial was in the Flynn Cemetery. The former Southport resi dent died in New York. N.Y. Burial was in John Smith Cemetery. EDITH R. GRAHAM Edith R. Graham, 75, of Brier wood Estates, Shallotte, died June 17 at The Brunswick Hospual. Graveside services were held Jun.^ 24 in Brunswick Memorial Gardens. LEE OLIVER Lee Oliver of Maco Road N.E. died June 23 at New Hanover Re gional Medical Center. The funeral was held June 26 at St. Phillip AME Church with burial in Christian Hope Church Cemetery, Leland. JEANNE CANADY KRAVITZ Jeanne Canady Kravitz of Kins ton, a former resident of Shallotte and Cary, died June 23. . The funeral was June 26 at Apex Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband of nearly 54 years, Eli Kravitz of the home; daughters and sons-in-law :Jerry H. and Deborah K. Miller of Cary and Mean J. and Patsy K Loo of Raleigh, and son, Robert Alan Kravitz of Caswell Center, Kinston; a granddaughter, Deborah Francine Miller of Cary; two grandsons, Jerry H. Miller Jr. of Cary and Ethan York Loo of Raleigh; and a sister, Rutha Evans of Ash. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Covenant Christian Church Building Fund, 1142 E. AMY CAROLINE FR1NK Amy Caroline Frink, 18, died Thursday. June 23. A Shallotte na tive, she was born Sept. 7. 1975. a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Frink. She was a member of Camp United Methodist Church and a graduate of Southeastern Comm unity College's Adult High School diploma program and was attending Brunswick Community College. In addition to her parents, she is survived by sisters, Leifch Ann Frink of Raleigh and Jill Frink of the home; maternal grandmother, Mrs. LV. (Tommie) Connor of Delco and a special aunt, Joan Connor of Wilmington. Funeral services were held June 27 at Camp United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Speake officiating. Burial was in Brunswick Memorial Gardens, Shal lotte. Donations may be sent to Duke University's Pediatric Oncology De partment. LUTHER B LAN TON CHEERS Luther Blanton "LB." Cheers, 64, of Red Bug Road. Shallotte. died June 25 at his home. He was bom in Brunswick County on Aug. 16. 1929. to the late William L. and Arlona Blanton Cheers and was re tired from International Paper Company after 32 years. He was a member of Shallotte First baptist Cnurcn and Shaiiotte Masonic Lodge 727 AF & AM. Survivors include his wife, Faye H. Cheers; a son, Darrell K Cheers and wife Linda of Shallotte; two daughters. Dianne Cheers of Shal lotte and Linda C. Hewett and hus band Jeris of Supply; a brother, Rotha Cheers of Shallotte; two sis ters, Ivey C. Stanley of Bolivia and Ruby Cheers of Shallotte; three grandchildren, Daniel and Whitney Richardson and Keith Cheers. Funeral services were held June 28 in Shallotte First Baptist Church with the Rev. Landis Lancaster offi ciating. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Shallotte, with Masonic rites. JAMES FREDERICK STRONG James Frederick Strong, 57. of Wayne Street, Leland, died June 25 at Cornlia Nixon Davis Nursing Home. Graveside services were held June 27 in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington. Mr. Strong was born in Wilm ington March 18, 1936, the son of the late Travis V. and Clara Mallard Strong. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and had been an industrial construction employee. He was pre ceded in death by a sister, Ann Strong Clark. Survivors include his wife, Hayse Hewett Strong of the home; three sons, Freddie Strong, Tim Strong and Bernie Strong, all of Wilm ington; two sisters, Ora Sue Strong Mosley of Charlotte and Audrey Strong Harrington of Wilmington; four stepsons, David and Paul Parish of Wilmington, Gary Parish of Pender Lea and Randy Parish of Leland; five grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren. Mrs. Bryan was bom in Dillon, S.C., on July 1, 1913, the daughter of the late John and Emma Miller. She moved here from Greensboro in 1963. She was a member of Bess Hayman Circle, life member of United Methodist Women and mem ber of the Sunday school. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawson L. Bryan, in 1984, and by an infant daughter. Emma Jane Bryan, in 1944. She is survived by two children, Sybil Bryan Brady of Yaupon Beach and the Rev. Dr. James L "Jerry" Bryan and wife Margaret of Graham; a sister, Violet M. Griffith of Aberdeen; brothers John B. Miller of Fayetteville and Richard Miller of Easley. ROBERT LEONARD WATTS Robert Leonard Watts, 78, of Village Road, Shallotte. died June 23 in The Brunswick Hospital. Born Jan. 7, 1916 in Brunswick County, he was a son of the late Charles Marvin and Alvania Simmons Watts. He was retired from Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation. Survivors include his wife, Eva Mae Stanley Watts; a son, Mendal Watts of Shallotte; a daughter, Carolyn Smith of Shallotte; a broth er, Amos Wilts of Bartow, Fla.; two sisters. Came Chadwick of Shallotte and Victoria Brown of Erwin; and four grandchildren. The funeral was held June 26 in the Chapel of Brunswick Funeral Service in Shallotte with the Rev. He is survived by his wife. Ruby W. Miles of the home. They were married in 1938. Also surviving are a daughter. Mrs. Bruce (Kathy) Quaintance and family of Ocean Isle Beach; a son. Jack W. Wiles and wife Pat or Rockwell. N.C.; six grandchildren and six great-grand children. Visitation was to be held Wed nesday, June 29, from 7-9 p.m. at Powles Funeral Service in Rock well. Burial was planned for Thurs day in Brookhil! Gardens, Rockwell. BARRY JAMES EVERETT Barry James Everett. 32, of 2325 Northridge Street SW, Supply, died June 26. He was born in Glendale, Arizona, on Nov. 21, 1961, the son of Shirley Snyder of Belmont and the late James C. Everett. He was a member of the Bonaparte Baptist Church, Calabash. Other survivors include his step mother, Marilyn Everett of Calabash; his wife, Kaye Everett of Denver, a son, Robert J. Everett; two daughters.
