Former Jailer Indicted On Sex-With-lnmate Charge BY ERIC CARLSON Sgt. Thomas Carver Gore, the SI -year-old former Brunswick County jailer accused of raping an inmate last month, was indicted by a grand jury Monday on a felony charge of engaging in sexual activity with a per son in his custody. A State Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the al leged May 4 incident did not find sufficient evidence to support a charge of rape, according to District Attorney Rex Gore, who is not related to the defendant. Nor was there enough evidence found to charge another inmate implicated by the alleged victim. However, the prosecutor found sufficient cause to bring the allegations before a gmnrf jury to seek sr. in dictment against Sgt. Gore on the lesser offense. The indictment states that the defendant Gore "un lawfully and feloniously did engage in vaginal inter course with Samantha Ann Stevens, a person over which he had assumed custody and control through his employment with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department as a jailer." Stevens, 23, was pregnant with her fifth child when the incident is alleged to have occurred. She was in Brunswick County Jail awaiting trial on charges of forgery and uttering, driving without a license and fail i'*c to appear in court. The alleged victim claims Sgt. Gore came to the door of her cell at about 2:30 a.m. and told her that ooe of her children was sick. She said he used the ploy to lure her into another room, where he raped her and in viicu another inmate to do likewise. Sgt.
