Holden Joins Neighbor Seeking Restrictions On Menhaden Boats BY DOUG RUTTER Holden Beach officials will ask the stale to restrict menhaden fishing off the Brunswick County coast in an effort to lower the risk of unsight ly fish spills on the strand. Town commissioners voted unan imously Tuesday night to send a let ter to the N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission asking the state panel to limit how close menhaden fishing boats can cornc ic the bcacti. Holden Beach board members want restrictions identical to those already in place in Dare County, where working menhaden boats must stay at least I'A nautical miles offshore between May 1 and Sept. 30 of each year. From Oct. I through Dcc. 31. menhaden boats must remain one half nautical mile off the Dare County coast. Holdcu Bcacli was the site of one of several local fish spills attributed to menhaden boats last year There were several other spills at Long Beach and officials there are spear heading a local effort to impose re strictions on the fishery. In a July I letter. Long Beach Town Manager Jerry Walters seeks Holden Beach's support in seeking regulations on menhaden fishing boats in Brunswick County coastal waters. The Long Beach Town Council asked its staff last month to contact other coastal communities in the county and seek support for restric tions on menhaden boats. Long Beach officials have sug gested local towns push for the same rules used in Dare County, accord ing to Walters' letter, and the coun cil is expected to take action at its July I meeting Walters indicated in the letter that the N.C. Marine Fisheries Commis sion could COn>iuct ilic icqiicsi at its Aug. 26 meeting. "Do wc have any input from the menhaden people? Do wc have any idea what we're doing to them? Thcv have to make a living," Holden Beach Commissioner Jim Foumier said Tuesday. "The concern is we were having the fish end up on the beach. That happened last year," Mayor Gay Atkins said. High! Appointed Town commissioners made four appointments to the planning and zoning board and four appointments to the board of adjustment Tuesday night. Re-appointed to the planning board were regular members Roger Williams and johnny Craig for three-year terms and alternates Myra Burke and Leonard Froehlich for one year. There were no other nomi nees for any of the seats. On the board of adjustment, com missioners voted unanimously to ap point Jack Vorndran to a three-year term as alternate. The board voted 4-1 to appoint Ed Weller to the regular scat previ ously held by Crawford Hart. Commissioner David Sandifer voted for Hart. On a 3-2 vote. Jim Hart man was named to fill the regular seat previ ously held by Allan Dameron. who was not eligible for rc-appointmcnt. Commissioners Fournier. Dwight Carroll and Marlaine Thomas voted for Hartman, while Sid Swarts and Sandifer voted in favor of Diane Clark. Foumicr, Carroll and Thomas al so voted to appoint Dan Harmon to the alternate seat occupicd by Thomas before her appointment to the board of commissioners. Swarts and Sandifer again voted in favor of Clark. Sewer Report Jim Griffin, a member of the Holden Bcach sewer fact- finding committee, was scheduled to give a STEVENS GOING TO GOLDSBORO West Basketball Coach Submits Resignation BY DOUG Rl'TTER Charlie Stevens, the head boys' basketball coach at West Brunswick High School, resigned effective Tuesday to take over the basketball program at Goldsboro High School. Stevens is leaving West Brunswick after one season to return to the Mide astern 4A Conference, where he coached from 1988 to I W2 at Eastern Wayne High School. "It's a 4A school and it's one of the top five or six basketball jobs in the state," Stevens said of Goldsboro. "It s an opportunity I just couldn't pass up." Last season under Stevens. West Brunswick's boys finished fourth in the Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference with a 5-7 record. The Trojans were 10-16 overall and advanced to the second round of the state 3A play offs. Stevens said he wasn't unhappy at West Brunswick, but couldn't turn down a job that he thinks is the best in North Carolina. "Every job I've ever taken I've al ways said if the Goldsboro job opened up I would take it," Stevens said Tuesday. "I didn't think I would get it. but I was fortunate enough to get it Stevens said the fact that he has worked in the Goldsboro area before and owns a residence there were ma jor factors in his decision. "It's like going home really," he said. "Basketball is a sport that people in Goldsboro love." Stevens added. "There arc people in Goldsboro who haven't rrasscu a game in 13 yews. There's a man there who hasn't missed a game in 20 years, home or away. Basketball there is what foot ball is here." Stevens said he's walking away from a West Brunswick basketball team that has a legitimate shot at winning a state championship in the next few years. "They're going to be real good next year, and the year after that ! think West Brunswick will have a great shot at winning a state champi onship. I'm walking away from a great basketball team." he said. "I'm very appreciative to the Brunswick County people. Mr. (Ed) Lemon and the school administra tion. for allowing me the opportuni ty to coach here. I think the pro gram's in good shape here and ready to take off." Lemon, the West Brunswick prin cipal. could not be reached for com ment Tuesday afternoon.
