PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Moore Attends Symposium Mav Moore, 1993-94 Brunswick County Tcacher of the Year, recently participated in the first statewide Teacher of the Year conference. Moore teaches seventh grade math at South Brunswick Middle School. She was one of 80 of the state's top teachcrs to attend the two-day meeting. The Goals 2000 Teacher of the Year Symposium of fered them a chance to network with fellow Teacher; of the Year and to meet legislators. Department of Public Instruction officials and oth ers who shape state education poli cies. Gov. Jim Hunt praised the teach ers for their innovative leadership and excellence in the classroom and urged them to continue working for changes that will benefit their stu dents. "I see you all forming a network of excellence, a network that can push new ideas, energy and enthusi asm out to every classroom across our state." said Hunt, adding his own pledge to "continue fighting" to sec that teachers are paid and treated like professionals Brunswick County's 1994 95 Teacher of the Year is Diana Healv of Union Elementary School. Perfect Grades Five Brunswick County students have received the Chancellor's Achievement Award at UNC-Wilm ington foi the spring semester 1994 after earning perfect 4.0 grade poini averages for 15 or more credit hours. They arc Shelley Denese Lan caster and Barbara Ellen Ixonard. both of Shallotte; Teresa Gayle Roval McCray of Supply; Hugh Franklin Cox of Southport; and James Stacey Whittington of Ice land Smith Is Scorer Ghislaine 'G. Smith. French teacher at the Crary School, has been selected to participate in the summer scoring of the North Carolina end-of-grade, open-ended reading test. The scoring will take placc at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in Durham The N.C. Department of Public Instruction has nearly 5 million open -ended responses to score. Smith agreed to take part in the final phase the new assessment. It is her sec ond year to be invited to score the new test. Makes 'Who's Who' Margie H. Reinhardt of Sunset Beach has been selected for in clusion of her biography in Who's Who Among Ameri can High School Stu dents , 1993-94. which will be published this fall. Reinhardt is a rising junior at West Brunswick High School and is treasurer of her youth group at St. James Episcopal Church in Shall otte. Only 5 percent of all high school students receive "Who's Who' re cognition annually, with nomina tions based on achievements in ath letics, academics and extracurricular activities. Student Trooper J. Adam Stanley of Shallotte was one of 30 high school students from across the state who were "graduat ed" June 24 from the N.C. American Legion Student Trooper Program. They were "sworn in" at the Highway Patrol's Training Center in Gamer and will report back to their peers in the community on what they learned The program is designed to create a better understanding of the law en forcement community by young people Students participated in physical trainng and a variety of in structional courses, including firearms safety, drug detection and precision driving. To qualify, rising seniors submit a 500-word essay expressing their in terest in law anu order, be of "good moral character" and "demonstrate quaities of patriotism and leader ship." Seven Earn Degrees Seven Brunswick County resi dents were among those receiving degrees from North Carolina Central University at the Durham school's May 14 commencement exercises. ShaHoiic. bachelor of business ad ministration; and Tania Butler. Shallotte. bachelor of science cum laude. biology. On Elon Dean's List Stephen Matthew Lancaster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Lancaster of Supply, was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Elon College. The dean's list includes students with no grade below a B and a grade point average of at least 3.40 in a minimum of 12 semester hours. Elon is a private, coeducational collegc in the Piedmont. It enrolls approximately 3,200 students. Simmons In Marines Marine Pvt. James L. Simmons, son of Eunice L. Simmons of and Lester Simmons of Longwood, re cently completed recruit training. During the training cycle with Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.. recruits are taught the basics of battlefield survival, introduced to typical military daily routine, and personal and professional standards. All rccruits participate in an ac tive physical conditioning program and gain proficiency in a variety of military skills including first aid, ri fle marksmanship and close-order drill. Teartiwork and self-discipline are emphasized throughout the cy cle. Simmons is a 1993 graduate of West Brunswick High School. Boldt Recognized With Navy Medal Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Trena K. Boldt. daughter of William I. and Marviean Mullis of Supply, recently received the Navy Achieve ment Medal. Boldt was cited for superior per formance of duty while serving as pharmacy supervisor at Naval Hos pital. Lemoore, Calif., where she is currently assigned. The achievement medal "singles out an individual ser vicemember for her initiative in making a significant contribution to the accomplishment of the com mand's mission," according to a Navy news release. Boldt was directly responsible for changes to the pharmacy's operating procedures which decreased patient waiting time by 25 percent. Suzanne Jones Is Sparkman Scholar Suzanne Jones, daughter of Sue Jones of Ocean Isle Beach and the late Sidney Edward Jones, has been awarded a Sparkman Leadership Scholarship at Saint Mary's for the 1 994-95 academic year. Jones is a rising collegc sophomore at Saint Mary's. The Caroline Hodges Sparkman Leadership Scholarship Fund was established by the late Alton Sparkman of Lynchburg. Va., to honor his wife, a member of the Class of 1929 These scholarships are among Saint Mary's most presti gious and arc awarded to students who arc "outstanding in their ex tracurricular contributions to school, church and community," a Saint Mary's news release states. Saint Mary's is a two-year liberal arts college and four-year preparato ry school for women. !t is in Raleigh. Frink On Dean's List Michael D. Frink was among 3,485 undergraduates earning dean's list honors at N.C. State University during the spring semester. To make the dean's list, students must earn an academic average of 3.25 or higher if they are carrying 15 or more hours of course work. Frink is majoring in electrical en gineering and is working with BellSouth in Charlotte for the sec ond semester as an outside plant en gineer. He is the son of Milton and Gladys Frink and the grandson of William and Lettie Frink of Sunset Beach and Bernice Marlow of Calabash. He is a 1990 graduate of West Brunswick High School. Pigott Trains Navy Fireman Paul S. Pigott, son of Susan A. Hern of Leland, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla. Dunng the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects de signed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close -order drill, naval history and first aid. He is a 1989 graduate of North Brunswick High School.
