Military Collectors Show Comes To Trask Coliseum Civil War collcctibles, antique arms and U.S. and foreign military arms and memorabilia will be dis played at UNC-Wilmington's Trask Coliseum Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17. Gavlik Performing At Senior Center Johnny Gavlik of Holden Beach will be playing his concertina every Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Shallotte Senior Citizens Center. Gavlik, who lives part-time in Fancy Gap, Va.. plays a 48-year-old Pearl Queen model concertina. He also entertains seniors in Yadkinville and Carroll County, Va. Gavlik retired after 32 years as a meat inspector with the U.S. De partment of Agriculture. The Min nesota native served with the U.S. Marines during World War II. Summer Reading Program Begins Thursday. Ends Aua- 1 8 The 1994 Summer Reading Pr ogram begins Thursday, July 14, with the theme "Dive Into A Book." The program continues through Aug. 18, and registration will re main open throughout the program. Children 6 and younger may be in the listener group to be called the "Sunfish." Those 6 to 9 will be in the easy-reader group, the "Dolphins" Children 10 and older will be in the juvenile group, the "Sharks." The groups will meet every Thursday as follows: Sunfish, 10 a.m.; Dolphins, 2 p.m.; Sharks, 3 p.m. Programs will last about 45 min utes. Diabetes Group To Meet July 2 1 The monthly meeting of the Dosher Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will take place Thursday, July 21. at 7 p.m. in the hospital conference room. By the group's request, Vicki Allen, registered dietitian, will re turn to present a new program about healthy eating and diabetes. Entitled "Market Basket." the program will cover shopping tips, reading and un derstanding food labels, diabetic ex changes and general good nutrition practices. For every 5 books a Sunfish or Dolphin reads or listens to, and for every 20 pages a Shark reads, he or she will be given one "sand dollar." The "sand dollars" may be used to buy prizes, games and activities at a Pirate party to be held Aug. 18. Sibelius and Stamitz will be among those performed. The clarinet, flute, clas sical guitar, organ, piano and saxo phone will be heard.
