PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Roberson Selected To Attend National Leaders Conference Jessica Robcrson of Ocean Isle Beach has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Con ference July 17-27 in Washington. DC. The conference is a leadership de velopment program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit, according to a NYLjC news release. Robertson, a junior at West Brunswick High School, will be among 350 delegates attending. Conference theme will be "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the leaders of Today." Throughout the 1 1 -day cveni. delegates wili interact with leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps. Highlights of the program include welcoming remarks from the floor of the U.S. House of Represen tatives and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club. Delegates will visit for eign embassies and receive policy briefings from senior government officials. Students may also meet with Sen. Lauch Faircloth, Sen. Jesse Helms or Rep. Charlie Rose. The conference is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit, nonpartisan ed ucational organization founded in 1985 for "fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential.*' On US. Honor Roll Amanda Noelle Brown has been recognized for academic achieve ment as a United States National Honor Roll Award winner. Amanda, who attends Shallottc Middle School, will appear in the academy's official annual yearbook. She is the daughter of Wayne and Jean Mac Kay Brown. Her grandpar ents are Mary E. During the six weeks of training the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in hu man relations. Coggers Win Awards At Tweetsie The Fire and Ice Cloggers of Ash won first place and overall grand champions in the Junior Line Division at the Twcetsie Clogging Jamboree June 25 and 26 in Boone. Tavis Thompson placed first in junior male solo and second place in the grand champion category. Alicia Rivenbark won first in junior female solo and grand champion in her category. Julie Yarborough won third place in junior female solo, and Kris Stanley placed third in the adult division. Sandy McManus and Alicia Rivenbark took second place in junior female/female duo competition. Tavis Thompson and Alicia Rivenbark won fust place in male-female duet and also won overall grand champion in their category. The Fire and Ice Cloggers, instructed by Tavis Thompson, have been performing as a group since this past February. Team members are Tavis Thompson, Kris Stanley.
