Beautification Committee will sponsor several Beach Sweeps during the coming year, the first scheduled for Tuesday, July 26. Newly appointed Beach Sweep co-chairs Pat Sandifer and Martha Spivey say they hope the program, which has been successful as an an annual project, will receive the same level of positive community re sponse four or five times during the year and "help keep Holden Beach clean and cared-for all year long." Volunteers are needed for the July 26 clean-up. Interested persons should contact Sandifer at 842 6485/3532 or Spivey at 842-8818. Other Reach Sweep committee members are Gay Atkins, Ruby Barker, Audrey Creger. Colleen Slusher and Rose Smith. Beach Sweep is normally held yearly in September as part of the N.C. Big Sweep, the nation's largest statewide waterway litter clean-up. Big Sweep began as a volunteer beach clean up in 1987 and has since spread inland across the state to in clude freshwater streams, rivers and lakes, the type of trash collected is recorded on data cards, and the infor mation is then analyzed and used to target anti-litter educational efforts. Big Sweep coordinators say one four-hour clean-up once a year is not enough to stop the problems and that they will focus on education and public awareness year-round. The statewide Big Sweep will take placc Sept. 17 and is expected to draw 12,000 volunteers statewide. i Ml W- ~ T"~ I1 $r month Rice Mill Winners Marie and Bob Gallick wtr: July "Yard of the McrUk "designees for the Rice Mill section of Sea Trail Plantation.
