SPORTING SCENF West Brunswick Working On Basketball Vacancy West Brunswick High School's i named within the next two weeks. Approval could come at the Bruns wick County Board of Education meeting Aug. I . Principal Ed Lemon said he planned to start interviewing candi dates this week to fill the vacancy cre ated by the resignation of Charlie Stevens, who took the basketball job at Goldsboro High. "We're looking for a person with expertise in basketball primarily who will help us with the football program secondly because it takes so many people to run a football program." Lemon said last week. The principal said he was caught off guard by Stevens' resignation. He was out of town when Stevens made the announcement and didn't find out about it until he read it in the newspaper. in Stevens" defense, he uiu ieave severai messages on Lemon s tele phone answering machine and made an effort to notify the principal before the word of his departure was released to newspapers and TV stations. Ix-mon also said he knew when Stevens came to West Brunswick that he was interested in the Goldsboro job. "I knew there was no doubt he want ed that job at one point in time," he said. Stevens was the second West Brunswick heau coach to resign this year in otder to take a job at a larger high school. Head Football Coach Jim Brett left 3A West Brunswick for a job at 4A Northern Nash. "I feel like we're serving as a tutoring place for bigger schools." Ixmon said. "But you can't blame people for leaving when they feel they arc better ing themselves" Arrowood Will Be Missed David Arrowood made it official last Monday, resigning as a teacher and assistant football coach at West Brunswick. He'll be working along side Brett this fall at Northern Nash. Ever since Brett announced his resignation last spring, it was widely be lieved that Arrowood would follow. They'll certainly shake things up on the Knights' sideline this fall Arrowood was a tremendous defensive coordinator who will be missed in Trojantown Players often referred to him as a genius. He has an extraor dinary football mind, not to mention a great work ethic. Before every Sunday night coaches' meeting. Arrowood would break down the West Brunswick game film from the previous Friday night. He'd also review film of the upcoming opponent and pick apart their offensive tendencies. Standing on the West Brunswick sideline for the last two seasons al lowed me to get a real appreciation for Arrowood's ability. He often knew what play an opponent was going to run before they ran it. I cmon is looking for a defensive coordinator to take Arrowood's place, but admits there may be no way to replace him.
