Tyler Works On Display
At UNCW Until SeDt. 30
Long Beach artist Ortrud M. Tyler
will have an exhibit entitled "Colors
of the Mind" on display until Sept
30 in the UNCW University Center
lobby.
A "Meet-the -Artist" reception
will be held Friday, Aug. 26, 6-7:30
p.m. in the university center. The
public is welcome.
Born in Berlin, Germany, Tyler
began her art studies with noted
German artists. After moving to the
United States, she worked with sev
eral nationally known artists.
Her work has won awards in
many juried shows, including the
N.C. Fourth of July Festival in
South port.
Her paintings are part of corpo
rate and private collections in Ger
many, Thailand, Canada and the
United States."
Month Of July Was Warm
It was a warm July this year, with
an average temperature of 81.7 de
grees, 1 .6 degrees warmer than nor
mal, according to the monthly cli
matological report of the National
Weather Service Wilmington office.
The honest days were the 10th
and 11th, when the temperature
reached 95 degrees. July had 19
days with high temperatures of 90
degrees or higher. The coolest tem
perature in July was 69 degrees on
the 3rd.
The month was very dry, with on
ly 4.76 inches of rain recorded, 3.37
9 inches below normal. There were
16 days in which measurable rainfall
occurred. This included 14 days
with one-tenth inch of rain or more
and only 2 days with half an inch of
rain or more. Thunderstorms oc
curred on 16 days.
Fifteen of July's 31 days were
partly cloudy and 4 were clear,
while 12 were on the cloudy side.
Total sunshine was 77 percent of
possible for the month. Normal is 64
percent.
July had an average wind speed
of 9.2 miles per hour compared with
a normal of 7.4 for the month. The
peak wind for the month was 32
mph from the southwest on the 28th.

The Calabash Volunteer Emer
gency Medical Service answered 43
calls during June, Chief Frank Egan
reported at the July 28 board of di
rectors meeting.
Fifteen calls were in Calabash and
12, in Sunset Beach. Of the 16 oth
ers, 5 were mutual aid for Shallotte
and 2 for Waccamaw.
Volunteers worked 126 manhours
and traveled 1,667 miles.
A new ambulance is expected to
be delivered in about 90 days, the
chief reported.

A group of friends from different
Spanish-language countries have
created the Hispanic Culture Assoc
iation of Women (HISCAWO).
Their goal, said Elena Miranda,
president, a native of Peru, is to help
the local Spanish-speaking popula
tion and to promote awareness and
understanding of the diversity of
Hispanic culture.
