Meeting Set On Menhaden
State Rep. David Redwine and lo
cal beach town officials arc expected
to meet Wednesday, Aug. 17, to dis
cuss the towns' request to restrict
menhaden fishing off the Brunswick
County coast.
Representatives of North Caro
lina's only menhaden operation and
two in Virginia also have been invit
ed to the 7 p.m. meeting at Bruns
wick Community College's adminis
tration building teaching auditorium
in Supply.
Redwine said last week he is
bringing the groups together in
hopes of resolving the conflict with
out government involvement.
Town boards at Sunset Beach,
Ocean Isle Beach, Holdcn Beach
and Long Beach have voted in re
cent weeks to ask the N.C. Marine
Fisheries Commission to regulate
menhaden fishing off Brunswick
County.
Local officials have requested the
same rules currently in place in Dare
County, where menhaden boats must
stay at least one-half mile offshore
Oct. 1 through Dec. 31 and \'A miles
off the beach May 1 through Sept.
30.
Menhaden boats have been
blamed for several local fish spills in
recent years, and town officials say
the spills are potentially harmful to
residents as well as the area's multi
million dollar tourism industry.
JerTy Schiil, executive director of
the N.C. Fisheries Association,
urged Long Beach officials last
month to talk with the three men
haden companies that fish North
Carolina waters instead of seeking
government regulations.
Through October 1993, Schiil
said more than 90 percent of the
menhaden landed last year by North
Carolina's only menhaden opera
tion, Beaufort Fisheries, was caught
off Brunswick County.
Citing data from the N.C. Divi
sion of Marine Fisheries and Na
tional Marine Fisheries Service,
Schill said most of the menhaden
caught off the Brunswick coast arc
within two miles of the beach.
Schill said more than half of the
menhaden catch from 1989 through
1992 was within a half mile of the
beach, and more than 77 percent
was within two miles.
