Three Local Drivers Injured In Four-Car Wreck Friday BY DOl'G RUTTER Three area residents suffered mi nor injuries as a result of a four-car accident last Friday in Shallotte that ended with one vehicle coming to rest on top of another. The wreck happened at 3:15 p.m. on Main Street approximately 200 feet south of the A1 Street intersec tion. according to Shallotte Officer H.K. Smith's report. A 1V86 Chevrolet Corvette pulled out of the driveway at McDonald's and was heading south on Main Street when it struck the rear of a 1VKK Honda that was stopped at a red light. Two other vehicles stopped in front of the Honda also were dam aged in the chain-reaction collision. The rear end of the Honda camc to rest on top of the Corvette. Officer Smith charged the driver of the Corvette. 47-year-old John W. McNeil of Spring Valley. N.Y.. with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision. Other drivers involved in the acci dent were Gordon William Nash Jr.. IV. of Holden Beach; Barbara Skipper Jones. 47. of Shallotte; and Twanna Michelle Gore, 19. of Little River. S.C. Nash. Jones and Gore complained of minor injuries and were taken to The Brunswick Hospital in Supply for treatment. McNeil was not in jured. The police report did not include a damage estimate for the Corvette. Total damage to the three other vehi cles was estimated at $2,550. A Shallotte teenager escaped seri ous injury Friday night when the bi cycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot at the Texaco Quick Stop at Grissettown. Derek Scott Green, 14, of Shal lotte. was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilm ington following the 11:45 p.m. ac cident at the gas station and conve nience store 3.2 miles west of Sunset Beach. A report filed by Trooper D.B. Harvell of the N.C. Highway Patrol said a 1983 Buick driven by Donald Jasper, 27, of Ash, was traveling east in the parking lot going past the gas pumps. Green was riding a bicycle south in the parking lot and it pulled into the path of the Buick. No charges were filed. A Brunswick County teenager was charged with driving while im paired. driving without an operator's license and careless and reckless dri ving following a one-car accident last Monday (Aug. 8). Jamie Huff. 18, of Iceland, was cited after the 1983 Datsun he was driving ran into a tree approximately 4.9 miles north of Lcland on Mount Misery Road, according to (he Highway Patrol. Trooper R.E. King's report says the wreck occurred at 12:20 a.m. as Huff was traveling west on Mount Misery Road at a "high rate of speed." The driver lost control of the ve hicle. which ran off the right side of the road then off the left side of the road and into a ditch. The Datsun crossed back over to the right side of the road and went into a ditch before striking a tree and overturning. Huff suffered incapacitating in Volunteer Tutors Sought To Help At Supply School (Cathy Roemer of Supply is look ing for senior volunteers interested in providing regular one-on-one help to students at Supply Elementary School. The idea struck the former Connecticut resident when, frustrat ed with efforts to find a math tutor for her own daughter, she saw a pro gram about school volunteers in an other state on television. "We need volunteers who will help students with math and read ing," said Roemer, who plans to co ordinate the volunteer corps. "I know what I want to do and Dr. (Principal Carolyn) Williams says if 1 can get the people, she will make the space available at the school." "We have so many seniors living in this area 1 can't imagine there aren't some who would be willing to help out." Roomer said she also plans to talk to the South Brunswick Interchurch Council to get word out through lo cal churches of the need for volun teers, and to consult with the Brunswick County Literacy Council for advice on setting up the pro gram. The council's Calabash satellite group has operated a successful tu toring program at Union Elementary School in Shallotte for at least three years. TWo years ago the school re ceived a grant to support the ongo ing effort. Seniors or others interested in serving as volunteer tutors at Supply Elementary are asked to contact Roemer at 842-7247. In another one-vehicle accident Aug. 8, two Supply teenagers were injured after the vehicle they were riding in struck a bridge on Stone Chimney Road. The wreck happened at 2:40 p.m. approximately 4.2 miles north of Holdcn Beach, according to Trooper C.E. Ward's report. A 1983 Chevrolet station wagon driven by 18-year-old Roger Mag gard ran off the right side of the road and struck the end of a bridge. Maggard and a passenger, 17 year-old Aaron Green, complained of injuries and were transported to The Brunswick Hospital in Supply. Trooper Ward charged Maggard with a scat belt violation.
