To Wed Oct. 23 Pattie Shue Lawman and Lewis Ray Safrit have announced their engagement and wedding date. Ms Lawman of Woodlraf is the daughter of Mavis Goodman Shue of Salisbury and R. Wayne Shue of Rockwell. Mr. Safrit of Salisbury is the son of the Rev. Don R. and Theresa Safrit of Ocean Isle Beach. The ceremony is planned for Sunday, Oct. 23, at Christiana Lutheran Church in Salisbury. A reception will follow in the church fellowship area. Friends and relatives of the couple and their parents are invited to the wedding and reception. Sixth Annual Charity Ball Set Sept. 24 At Sea Trail Pavilion The sixth annual Charity Ball will be presented by the Prescription for Excellence Foundation on Saturday, Sept 24, at the Jones/Byrd Pavilion at Sea Trail Plantation. The Dick Goodwin Big Band will return to Brunswick County for the black-tie event. The nonprofit foundation's pro ject provide the Brunswick County public schools with the motivational program "Pathways to Excellence." The program teaches personal ac countability, improved self-image and goal orientation as the pathway to greater success and happiness. Its goal is "to foster the full develop ment of each student's God-given talents." Over the years the foundation has presented Brunswick Community College with funds to the Woodrow Russ, W.A. Stanley, P.R. Hankins and David Batten scholarships. In addition, it has sponsored motiva tional seminars for Brunswick County high schools and has sup ported the South Brunswick Islands Committee of 100 and Habitat for Humanity. In 1989 the foundation estab lished the Rourk Award, which is presented annually to a community service organization for outstanding service. Tickets to the ball are $100 per person. GED Grads Honored For Accomplishments More than 200 Graduate Equivalency Dip loma (GED) graduates and their guests attended the Brunswick Community College Basic Skills Annual Awards Ceremony Aug. 11. Keynote speaker Betty Keanc. introduced by Vclva Jenkins, associate dean of continuing edu cation. described her experiences obtaining her GED at BCC in 1986 and continuing her studies in BCC's General Education Program. Keene. who now teaches at South Brunswick High School, graduated from the BCC program in 1988, then completed both bachelor's and mas ter's degrees in education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Receiving awards for the individual highest GED score in each subject area on the examination were Andrew Howell, mathematics, Bobby Com, science; Demetrius Bernard, science and social sci ence; Steven Somersett, literature; and Cheryl Faircloth. writing. The awards were presented by Brunswick Community College GED Examiners Catherine Godley and Glady Wagenseii. Andrew Howell received an award for having the highest total score on the GED among those who took the exam at BCC this year. This quali fies him for the GED scholarship at BCC if he wishes to continue his education. Outstanding attendance awards went to Quessic Butler. Awards also were given for determination, de pendability, congeniality and helpfulness among those in the GED classes. Jerry Thrift, vice president of community and continuing education, presented a special award plaque to BCC Trustee Willie Fullwood, the col lege's former director of literacy program. He also presented a special award to Bruns wick Interagency Program Director Anita White, who had served as an acting literacy program head and is currently a trainer. Thrift also gave GED Examiner/Retention Special Catherine Godley a plaque for four years of service to the basic skills program. Godley is moving to Kansas this month. In addition to the awards ceremony, the grad uates and guests enjoyed a barbecue pork and chicken dinner and were entertained by vocalists Gaye Fulford and Kimberly Fullwood. They were welcomed by BCC President W. Michael Reaves. The program opened with a prayer by the Rev. Dwarka Ramphal.
