PEARL THARPE HUDSON Pearl Thaipe Hudson. 77. died Aug. 9 at The Brunswick Hospital. Born March 8. 1917. she was a daughter of the late Tommy and Carrie Bellamy Tharpe. She was the widow of Ervin Hudson. Survivors include two daughters. Bobby Messick of Ocean Isle Beach and Judy Simmons of Ash; six brothers. Luther Tharpe and Murril Tharpe. both of Shallottc. and loician Tharpe. layton Tharpe and Alvin Tharpe. all of Ash. and Charlie Tharpe of Calabash: five sis ters. Ivey Todd of Myrtle Bcach. May Hudson and Lena Prince, both of Ash, and Carrie Jackson and Ethel Midgett, both of Calabash; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral was held Aug. 12 at Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte. with the Rev. Larry Ward officiating. Burial was in Brunswick Memorial Gardens. FLORENCE ROBERGE Florence Roberge. 74, of Wind jammer Village. Little River. S.C., died July 20 at her home after an ill ness. Bom in Manchester. N.H.. she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Florence Schultz Leduc. She was a graduate of Manchester West High School. She lived in Hooksett, N.H., for 35 years before moving to Little River in 1982. Mrs. Roberge retired from the International Shoe Co. tannery. She was a past matron of Bethany Chapter 61 of Pembroke. N.H.. and was a grand representative to Ohio. She was also a member of the Past Matrons and Patrons Club and was past noble grant of Pansy Rebekah l>odge 90 in Hooksett. Survivors include her husband of 44 years. Armand Roberge; two sons. Dennis Roberge of Columbus, Ohio, and Brian Roberge of Brighton. Mass.; a brother. Ernest Leduc of Manchester. N.H.; five grandchildren and a great-grandson. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Manchester, N.H. A memorial service was held Aug. 12 at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church with the Rev. The funeral was held Aug. 13 at Hooper Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the Hooper Hill Cemetery. STEVEN RENE WAITE Steven Rene Waite of Maple Street, Winnabow. died Aug. 10 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sacramento, Calif., on May 14. 1959, the son of Harvey Norris Waite and Ann McCormick Waite of Winnabow. He was employed in retail sales and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Surviving in addition to his par ents arc his sister. Tammy La Brecque of Leland; his brothers. Harvey D. Waite. serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany, and Marvin Gerald Waite of Wilmington; his step-grandfather and seven nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 12 in St. Mary Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas P. Had den. Burial was in Greenlawn Mem orial Park. ELSIE SINGLETARY HAMMONDS Elsie Singletary Hammonds of Chadwick Trailer Park, Leland, died Aug. 1 1 at home. She was bom in Lumbcrton on Oct. 3. 1927, the daughter of the late Robert Singletary and Lena Caicutt Singletary Jordan. She was the wid ow of Raymond R. Hammonds and a member of the Baptist faith. She was a past employee of Easter Rebuilders. Surviving are her children. Caro lyn Fowler and Sally Schurr, both of Leland. Shirley Lewis of Currie and Raymond Hammonds Jr. of Cape Hatteras; three sisters, Loleta Wat son of Leland and Brenda Tyson and Barbara Cowan, both of Wilming ton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Aug. 13 in Oakdale Cemetery by the Rev. Robert E. Lee. HARVEY GOODWIN RAMSEY Harvey Goodwin Ramsey, 55, of River Drive, Southport. died Aug. 13 at his home. The funeral was held Aug. 16 at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Chapel, Southport. with the Rev. PD. Mid gett officiating and members of the Southport Rotary Club serving as pallbearers. Burial was in North wood Cemetery. He was a native of Kinston. the son of the late A.F. and Adrienne Goodwin Ramsey. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Tyson Ramsey; a son, Kevin A. Ramsey of Charlotte; three grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanne R. Byrd of Silver Spring, Md.. and Nancy V. Ransey of Knoxville, Tenn.; and three brothers, J. Forrest Ramsey of Mullins, S.C., Herbert C. Ramsey of Longwood, Fla., and Cabell C. Ramsey of Harker's Island. a retired officer of the JU S. Army Corps of Engineers and a decorated veteran of two tours in Vietnam. He had been associated with Baid Head Island; served as the director of the N.C. Ferry Division; and most recently worked as a man agement consultant. He was a member of the Army Engineer Association and the South port Rotary Club. He served as board member for the Rotary Club. WILLIAM HENRY STEGALL William Henry Stegall, 65, of Long Beach, died Aug. 12 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The funeral was held Aug. 15 at Oak Island Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Richard DePriter and the Rev. Michael Ward officiating. A memor ial service was to be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug 17, at Resur rection Lutheran Church. Charlotte, with Pastor William Gittner and Pastor H.H. Mirly officiating. A graveside service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 17 at Sunset Memory Gardens. Charlotte. Mr. Stegall was born Sept. 28, 1928. in Charlotte and moved to Long Bcach in 1987. He was a grad uate of Charlotte Technical High School, was a retired sales manager and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a mem ber of Fox Squirrel Country Club, American Legion and Oak Island Senior Citizens. Survivors include his wife, Julia Love Stegall of the home; a son, R.A. (Art) Stegall and wife Barbara of Charlotte; a sister, Martha S. Jarre 1 1 and husband Luther of Char lotte; and two grandchildren. Mary and John Stegall of Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Oak Island Presbyterian Church or Lower Cape Fear Hos pice. HELEN JONES KELLY Helen Jones Kelly of Delco died Aug. 14 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born in Whitevillc on June 3, 1923, the daughter of the late Daniel V. and Elizabeth Mae Long Jones Sr. She was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Robert David Kelly of Ashtown, Ark., James Kelly of Stafford. Va.. and Jerry Kelly of Riegelwood; two sis ters, Mattie Grice of Wilmington and Lillian Walters of Whitevillc; two brothers, John Jones of Ocean Isle Beach and D.V. Jones of Long Bcach; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 16 in Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by the Rev. Carey HorTell. Burial followed in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Union Grove Baptist Church Building Fund. MARY VICHESKY BENZIE Vichesky Benzie, 74-, -died Aug. 13 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Born in Finley, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Francis Cmmrine and Cora Corbin Cmmrine. She was a graduate of Finley High School and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was a secretary and had been employed at National Welders for 20 years. Her first husband, Fred John Vichesky, and her second husband, Richard S. Benzie, preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, Fred Vichesky Jr. of Sunset Beach, Harry "Butch" Vichesky and Richard Benzie of Charlotte; five daughters, Sandy Lange of Chapel Hill, Sue Ferrell of Lakeland, Fla., Linda Smith of Monroe, Barbara Benzie of Sunset Beach, Mary Cheek of Houston; a brother, Edward Edgington of Wyandotte, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and 7 grcat-grandchil dren. The funeral was held Aug. 16 at the Hankins and Whittington Chapel in Charlotte. Burial was in Sharon Memorial Park. Charlotte. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 9488. Charlotte NC 28205. ERVIN NOVALL THORNTON Ervin Novall Thornton of Bluff Road, Leland, died Aug. 12 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was bom in Dunn on June 20, 1921, the son of the late Lovette G. and Georgianna Jackson Thornton. He was preceded in death by his wife. Veronica, in 1989. He retired as police chief for the Orangeburg. N.Y.. Rockland Psychiatric Center. Surviving are his children. Mic hael E. Thornton Sr., Dennis J. Thornton. Sharon L. Marsico, Kathleen T. Busey, Patricia T. Rob ershaw; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and special friend Beatrice Floyd. A graveside service' was held Aug. 15 at Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Wilson officiating. HAROLD F. SESSIONS Harold "Pete" Franklin Sessions, 52, of Supply died Aug. 14 at Duke University Hospital in Durham after an illness. A son of Jesse Mi show Sessions and the late Monroe Sessions, he was bom in Dillon. S.C, on Sept. 4, 1941. He was a retired salesman with Cherry Grove Hardware and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Dillon, include his wife, Deborah Cook Sessions; two step sons, Richard Drumheller of Eaton. Ga., and David Smith of North Myrtle Beach; two daughters, Gwen Sessions of Rowans, France, and Lisa S. Johnson of Little River, a stepdaughter. Rhonda Simmons of Jacksonville. Fla.; a brother, Richard Sessions of Sarasota, Fla.; and seven grandchildren. The family was to receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17. at the home, 2228 Buoy Drive, Supply. A graveside service was sched uled for Thursday, Aug. 18, in Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kirk Lawton officiat ing. LINDA ANN GORE Linda Ann Gore, 39, of 7981 Ocean Highway West, Sunset Beach, died Aug. 15 at The Bruns wick Hospital. Arrangements were to be announced by Peoples Funeral Home, Shallotte. CHURCH ACTIVITIES Oak Island Church Appoints New Minister The Rev Michael L. Ward is the new minister at Oak Island Pres byterian Church and will conduct his first service on Sunday. Aug. 21. It will be the church's 18th an niversary celebration. Sunday school begins at 9:15 a.m. The worship ser vice is at 10:15 and will be followed by a homecoming dinner. All members and friends of the church are invited to attend and bring a dish for the dinner. A Richmond. Va., native. Ward is retired from the Air Force and served in the communication and recruiting fields. He has worked as a hank re turn teller, insurance agent and church custodian while completing his undergraduate degree, bachelor of arts with a major in religious stud ies and business administration, and the master of divinity degree. Ward and his wife Linda, of Lynchburg, Va., have been married for 29 years and have a daughter [.aura. 25, a son Chris, 22, and a granddaughter Kristin, 5. Freeman At Chapel The Rev. Tom Freeman is the pas tor of the week at the Holden Beach Chapel, a non-denominational chap el on Rothschild Street across from Holden Beach Town Hall. Freeman, a Baptist minister from Dunn, will speak at the 1 1 a m wor ship service Sunday, Aug. 21. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. and a nursery is available. Witness Training Set As part of the Brunswick Baptist Association's preparations for the denomination's "Here's Hope ? Share Jesus Now 1995" evangelism campaign, two days of personal wit ness training will be offered Aug. 29 and 30. The 7 p.m. sessions will be held at Faith Baptist Church at Bolivia and will be led by Gene Jurgenson. Attendance is open all laypersons within the church and pastors. Gene Perritt is director of evange lism for the association. Bazaar Sept. 3 South Brunswick Islands As semblies of God will host its first craft bazaar Saturday, Sept. 3. from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. to benefit the church building fund. The event will feature baked goods, crafts, refreshments and chances to win an imported col lectible nativity set or afghan. The church is at 5850 Beach Drive (N.C. 179) at Occan Isle Beach. Aglow To Meet Chris Stanley will be guest speak er at Southport Women's Aglow on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Senior Citizens Building on Atlantic Street, Southport. Refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 10. According to spokesman Bonnie Leonard, it is a special meeting to which women attending are encour aged to bring their husbands, sons or friends. Stanley said, "I am looking for ward to sharing how God used can cer to show me how much He loved me." Emmanuel Dedication A dedication service will be cele brated Sept. 4 at Emmanuel Gut reach Church on Russtown Road, Longwood. Pastor IJoyd Ward will give his message beginning at 1 1 a.m. The service will be followed by a pig picking. After the meal, there will be a puppet show and special singing When the congregation formed in i December 1992, services were tem porarily housed at Nelson's Pine straw and Nursery "while plans were being made to build a church. "The building has a lot of love in it," said spokesman Shirley Scees ley, who expressed the church mem bers' gratitude to the nonprofit Brick Missions of Hickory, which donated all the brick work done on the church. The public is invited to the dedi cation. Youth Day Set The First Baptist Church of Southport will observe its annual Youth Day services Sunday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. The day's theme is "Celebrating Our Youth: A Day of Honor and Recognition." Guest minister will be the Rev. Irvin W. Everett, pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church of Rocky Mount. Everett has been preaching since age 8, was licensed to preach at age 13 and was ordained at 16. The "Voices of Praise" and the Everett t-Jisemble of St. Paul Baptist Church will provide music. Pastor Ray C. Gilbert said the community and the public are wel come to attend the services.
