CHURCH ACTIVITIES St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church Ground-Breaking Slated For September 4 The Rev. Beth Kearney will be guest speaker Sept. 4 for the ground breaking ceremonies of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church. The new church facilities will be constructed six miles south of Shallotte on U.S. 17. Kearney is assistant to Bishop Mark Menees of the N.C. Synod. She will be representing the bishop at the ceremonies. St. Luke currently has 129 mem bers. having begun with 74 charter members who formed the original congregation in 1988. Pastor is Donald Safrit. Weekly worship ser vices have been held at Shallotte Middle School until new facilities could be built. Construction contract for the church has been awarded to Lew ellyn Builders of Calabash. A Build ing Committee is chaired by Carlton "Bud" Craig assisted by David M. Beaver. Initially the congregation will worship in an all-purpose area which will scat approximately 200. There will also be a pastor's office, secretary's office, kitchen, class rooms, nursery, restrooms, storage areas, choir room and narthex. Plans are to erect a sanctuary later. The Iuitheran Men in Mission and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Chorch of American (WELCA) groups have held yard sales to assist with the church furnishings. WEL CA will be equipping the kitchen with appliances and other items. Teen Rally Sept. 4 A teen rally will be held Sunday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. beside the Shal lotte National Guard Army on Main Street. Featured will be Gary and Shan non Casola of Heart Menders Mini stry. The Casolas attended New Life Bible College and arc popular lead ers of youth conferences and rallies. The rally will include music, dra ma. free food and door prizes. All teens are welcome, said spokesman Tami Varnam. Pastor's Day Lettie's Grove Pentecostal Free will Baptist Church will celebrate its annual Pastor's Appreciation Day on Sunday. Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. Pastor Maurice Milligan and wife Margie have served the church for IS years. He became pastor of Lettie's Grove Church in 1967. After serving the church for one year, he went to Bladenboro where he served for 11 years. He returned to Lettie's Grove 14 years ago and has seen the church grow under his leadership from 17 members to an attendance of more than 200. Guest speaker for the occasion is the Rev. Winston Trio Charged With Larceny, Assault, Robbery Three Winston-Salem residents, including a teenage girl, were arrest ed early Saturday after allegedly robbing a Shallotte man and hitting his face and head with a shovel, po lice said. Michael J. Myers, 21, and Shawn W. Ward, 21, remained in Bruns wick County Jail Tuesday under S 10,000 secured bond. The third suspect, 19-year-old Nancy Jane Dickens, was released Monday on SI 5.500 bond. Shallotte Police Chief Rodney Gause said all three have been charged with felony larceny, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. In addition, authorities charged Dickens with felony possession of cocaine and hindering and delaying after she allegedly gave police offi cers a false name. Country Fair To Highlight Weekend In Seaside Area Labor Day weekend will bring a two-day Country Fair to the Seaside area. Seaside United Methodist Church is planning the event, which will oc cur Friday, Sept. 2, from 3 until 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept 3, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The church is on N.C. 179 near Sunset Beach. Coastal Baptist Center Offers Two Winter Semester Courses The winter semester of study at Coastal Baptist Study Center will begin with its first class meeting Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 8:30 a.m. On that day, time forms will be filled out and fees paid.
