Leland 4-H'er Places In State Sewing Contest A Leland 4-H'cr won fifth place in the statewide Back-to-School with Cotton Sewing Contest held Aug. 1 1 at Peace College in Raleigh. Stephanie Ganey, daughter of Myrtle and Floyd Ganey of Moore Road, competed against other 12-to 13- year -olds from across the state. She is a member of the Leland 4-H Club. In a fashion show at the end of the contest, Stephanie modeled the blue and white country-style dress trim med with lace that she had made. She received a SIS cash award from the N.C. Cotton Wives. The competition was held by the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service. Beach Day Is September 4 The last of the 1994 Summer Fun Beach Days, sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department and Long Beach Recreation Department, is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 4. A volleyball tournament will kick off the scheduled activities. Players will meet at the Long Beach cabana at 11:30 a.m. Music will be provided by "Cream of Soul" from 1-4 p.m. Other activities will include a sand castle contest and children's games. Highway 211 Shower To Benefit Ronald McDonald House The "Friends From Calabash" or ganization will sponsor a shower to benefit the Ronald McDonald House serving Duke University Medical Center. Sea Trail Plantation will be site of the Sept. 20 event, which will take place from 1 until 3 p.m. Clubs and organizations from throughout Brunswick County have been invited to participate in the ef fort by attending the shower and by making or donating items for Ronald McDonald House. A group is meeting at the Cala bash Emergency Medical Services building on N.G. 179 on the third Tuesday of each month. 9-11 a.m., to make crafts and other items for the effort. Aluminum tabs are being collect ed from soft drink and beer cans. They are recycled to help families who cannot afford $10 a night to stay at Ronald McDonald House. The Friends group also is collecting UPC symbols and grocery store re ceipts for programs which offer re bates. Among items on the extensive Ronald McDonald House "wish list" are personal items such as travel size soaps, shampoo, disposable ra zors, toothbrushes and toothpaste; housewares such as plastic food storage containers, paper towels and baking staples; business office needs such as postage stamps and comput er furniture; games and toys; and plants for the yard and grounds At the Sept. 20 shower, personnel from Ronald McDonald House will show videotape of the house and will provide information on its ac tivities. The shower will be co-spon sored by McDonalds Restaurant in Shallotte.
