UCB's Sasser Urges Graduates To Seek 'Real Success' BY SUSAN USHER More than 80 Brunswick Com munity College graduates, clad in Carolina blue gowns and enormous smiles, marched Friday night with a dignity suiting the background strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" and the elegant setting of the Odcll Williamson Auditorium. But the polite reserve of this largest group to ever participate in commencement at BCC transformed into enthusiastic support for one an other when it came time to accept certificates and diplomas. David Kelly, chairman of BCC's Board of Trustees, conferred certificates, de grees and diplomas as whoops and cheers and occasional grunts or whistles rang out from the audience that overflowed into the balcony of the 1,500-seat auditorium. During the year 165 students earned certificates, degrees or diplo mas in curriculum programs ranging from general education to nursing to welding, and another 116 earned their GED, the near-equivalent of a high school diploma. Graduates also cheered and ap plauded guest speaker E. Rhone Sasser's brief remarks as the Hallsboro native wished each of them success in life, "real success." He defined that success as achiev ing a balance in life, "being at peace with one s self, with one's family and friends, and with one's God." To achieve that balance, the chair man and chief executive officer of United Carolina Bancshares ad vised. requires a commitment to use ones God-given talents to the fullest, to focus on helping others, and to be honest. "People will rally behind those who make a sincere effort even if they fail, but not if they arc dishon est, said Sasser. a native of Hallsboro and one-time Shallotte ex ecutive for Waccamaw Bank & Trust. He urged graduates to find work they enjoy, that allows them to both make a living and an enjoyment of living." You can find good people every where. people who will help you do your work and who will help you deal with disappointments," said Sasser. Most of the time, he said, those disappointments will turn out to be minor if you arc doing work you enjoy. "You don't have to bat 1.000," said Sasser. "You can come up to bat and miss seven times out 10 and they'll put in the Hall of Fame for batting .300. You just have to do the best you can with what you have." "Sharing the richness within each of us is what community is all about, he said, challenging gradu ates to, wherever they go, seek to build "communities that promote peace, prosperity and togetherness." Vice President of Student Dev elopment Beth McLean presented seven special awards on behalf of the faculty and staff. ?
