Dogs Take Bite Out Of Trojans BY DOUG R UTTER Wallace-Rose Hill outscored West Brunswick 14-0 last Friday night at the UCB Football Jamboree ? the fi nal tune-up before the start of the high school football season. "We've got a lot left to do and we knew we did. I think if anything the kids got their eyes opened," West Brunswick Head Coach Yogi Hickman said after the scrimmage at Wilmington's Legion Stadium. The Bulldogs racked up US yards rushing in two quarters, while West Brunswick's offense was limited to three first downs and 39 total yards in three posses sions. "I thought we played hard, but I was a little con cerned that we got frustrated and the reaction when things weren't going our way. We need to keep a posi tive attitude," Hickman said. Wallacc-Rose Hill senior Terry Newkirk carried the bulk of the load for the Bulldogs, rushing 12 times for 51 yards and a touchdown. Robert McKenzie carried five times for 48 yards. West Brunswick and Wallace-Rose Hill faced off in the second scrimmage of the jamboree, following Whiteville and New Hanover. New Hanover did not score in their contest, but helped set up the Bulldogs' first touchdown. Wallacc-Rose Hill opened the scrimmage where New Hanover left off, with the ball at West Bruns wick's 15-yard line. An 11-yard run by Newkirk led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Sam Robinson. The Bulldogs added another touchdown with 3:47 left in the scrimmage. Newkirk's 2-yard plunge capped an 18-play, 62-yard drive. Wallace-Rosc Hill may have scored more points if West Brunswick hadn't recovered a fumble in its own end zone. "We'll get better," Hickman said. "It's not a situa tion where we're not going to improve. We'll be better when we leave the field Monday afternoon than wc are now." Hickman pointed out that the Trojans were the only team in the eight -team jamboree that did not have any coaches on the field. Coaches are permitted on the field during scrimmagcs. "That was by design," he said. "We didn't want to be in a situation where wc could be right there on the field telling the kids what to do." West Brunswick also played a lot of kids at different positions as the coaching staff continues looking for the right combination of players. "This is gonna be a good football team. It's not gonna happen overnight. We've got to find the people and put them in the right spots," Hickman said. South Brunswick and Hoggard played to a scoreless tie in their scrimmage, which ended with Hoggard at the Cougars' 2-yard line. Whiteville defeated New Hanover 7-0, and South Columbus outscored Laney 21 14. South Columbus won the cheerleading competition held in conjunction with the eighth annual jamboree. Laney placed second and New Hanover was third. RIVALS MEET FOR 25TH TIME Trojans , Cougars Clash Friday BY DOUG R UTTER The Trojans love winning The Game. The Cougars are tired of losing The Game. When high school football season opens across North Carolina on Friday night, local fans will have a dandy on tap in Boiling Spring Lakes with South Brunswick's Cougars hosting West Brunswick's Trojans. It will be the 25th football game between these county rivals, a series that dates back to 1973. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Both schools have new head foot ball coaches this year, but it hasn't taken long for West's Yogi Hickman and South 's Dcned Force to find out what the game means in Shallotte and Southport. "The kids don't want to lose to them," Hickman said. "It's impor tant to the kids. I think it's always important when you play a rival." West Brunswick's kids have dom inated the series recently, winning five games in a row and seven of the last eight to take a 14-10 lead in the series. "Most of our staff has been here for a long time," Force said. "I'm well aware of the rivalry between the two schools. I guess it's like Clemson-South Carolina or North Carolina-North Carolina State." "It's a good thing for the commu nity. It's a rivalry and a chance for everyone to see the schools early. I just hope we can start being compet itive with them and win every once in a while," Force said. West and South will meet twice this season. The only game that counts in the Waccamaw Conference standings will be played the final Friday of the regular sea son, Nov. 4, in Shallotte. Hickman said the conference game will mean a lot more than this week's non-conference contest, but he'd still like to win it "It's a very important game to open the season, playing our confer West-South Series YEA8 WINNKB SCORE -West leads series 14-10 ence rivals right down the road," he said. "We need to get some game experience for our young people." West Brunswick escaped Boiling Spring Lakes with a 29-20 victory last year and went on to capture its second straight state championship. Hickman said the Trojans will have to play well Friday to come away with another win. He said South 's run-and-shoot offense could present problems. "They're wide open and some of the things they do offensively are hard to defend," he said. "When you face an offense like that you're sus ceptible to the big play. 1T>ey're cer tainly dangerous offensively." 1973 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1991 1992 1992 1993 West 13-0 South 7-6 West 14-0 West 56-6 West 24-20 South 34-31 South 25-0 South 40-13 West 94) West 25-0 South 206 South 9-8 West 14-13 South 10-8 South 40-22 South 25-15 West 49-6 West 22-20 South 21-14 West 34-7 West 13-6 West 35-0 West 22-0 West 29-20 Force said his Cougars must be mentally ready to play Friday night, or it could be a long night. "They're gonna be tough to beat. 1 just hope we can keep it close." Force and most other coaches consider West Brunswick the team to beat in the Waccamaw Con ference. "They've just got too much expe rience and when cmnch time comes they are going to be there because they've been there before," Force said. "I think West Brunswick has a fine football team. They have tre mendous speed. They have good leadership from their seniors and they know how to win. Their of fense will be tough to stop." Other games involving Wacca maw Conference teams this week include East Columbus at Fairmont, Southwest Onslow at Pender, East Bladen at Whiteville, Bladenboro at South Columbus and West Colum bus at Laney.
