Hugh McCullough Wins Brierwood President's Cup Tournament For Men Hugh McCullough was the over ail winner of the President's Cup Tournament, a two-week match play event sponsored by the Brierwood Men's Golf Association. The tournament concluded Aug. 13 with McCullough shooting net 74 to defeat flight winners Gene Loflin and Bob Sterner in a stroke play playoff. The men's association also held a captain's choice to close out the tournament. First place went to Dave Harper, Jack Causer, John Martocci and Dick Anzelone with 64. The team of Jim Crosby, Bill Poison, Bill Grossman and Emile Vrydaghs placed second with 66, followed by Neal McCall, Ron McCall, Bill Rose and Ted Nara zinski with 67. In the regular Brierwood men's event last Thursday, two teams tied for first place with scores of 121 us ing a two best ball format. Bill Miller, Bemie Gruzlewski, Emile Vrydaghs and Miles Umber ger tied the foursome of Neal McCall, Jack Causer, Bill Pingo and Norm Soucie. Ob Aug. 15, the team of Jim Crosby, Mike Prokop, Barney Martin and Rick Rickbeil shot 18 under-par 1 18 to win a two best ball event. Don Redding. Joe Dtstl, Miles Umberger and Alton Gabor shot 123 and tied for second with Neal McCall, Ron McCall, Ted Narazin ski and a blind draw. Brick Landing Women Ruth Gardner and Peg Agrimonti took first place in the Brick Landing Plantation Women's Golf Asso ciation shootout last Thursday. Ursula Styczynski and Sue Hou ston placed second, followed by Marion Rhoads and Betty Bonniol. Chipping in for birdie were Gard ner at the second hole and Peg Campana at the fifth. Rhoads birdied the first hole and Vivian Rowe chipped in at 14. Carolina Shores Ladies Ginnie Derrickson shot net 27 to lead the top flight in the Carolina Shores Ladies Golf Association crossover tournament last Thursday. Ellen Rose placed second with net 29. Right B winners were Blanche Johnson with 30.5 and Dottie Russo with 33.5. In Right C, Helen Marsh led the way with net 29. She was followed by Joan O'Neill with 29.5. Carolyn D'Avanzo won Right D with net 24, and Marge Schober was second with 27.5. Reporting chip-ins were Shirley Vazquez at the first hole, Gerry Burdick at the fourth, Joan Sullivan at the 1 1th and Russo at the 14th. Marsh made a birdie at the second hole. Betty Kibblchouse had the low gross of 90 and low putts with 30. Sea Trail Men Doug Mehne, Bob Erbach and Lynn Slimmer shot 121 to win the Sea Trail Men's Golf Association tournament last Tuesday. A blind draw was used for the fourth score. Rnishing one stroke back in sec ond place was the team of Don Cooper, Joe Carpinello, Bill Burkart and a blind draw. Ron Often, Jim Fernald, Bill Zanzalan and Dutch Geesey placed third with 122, followed by John Murphy, Bud Tunt, Clarence Brown and Bob Bobinski with 127. Finishing fifth, also with 127, was the foursome of Don Lowensten. John Gregory, Gene Connelly and Ken Harris. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Herb Klapp at the second hole. Gene Bilz at the fifth, Connelly at the 13th and Marv Peters at the 17th. firfofwood Ladies Nancy Bouldin shot gross 81 to lead the first flight in the Brierwood Ladies Golf Association tournament last Tuesday. Low net winners in the top flight included Betty Gabor with 66 and Marje Roach with 69. Bouldin had low putts in the flight with 27. In the second flight, Lois Beato had the low gross of 89 and Ruth Linder fired the low net of 67. Helene Baker placed second with net 70. Beato had low putts with 27. Carolyn McCroskey and Jane Flieg tied for low gross in the third flight with rounds of 102. Louise Blizzard posted the low net of 73 and also had low putts with 29. Fourth flight winners included Marion Rockstroh and Alice Struck, who tied with gross 108. Ginny Anzelone had the low net of 77. Dodie Nil and had low putts with 31. Chipping in for birdie last week were Joan Cowie at the ninth hole. Roach at the 10th and Bouldin at the 16th. Also making chip-ins were Blizzard at the first and 12th holes, Ginny Campbell at the first, Anzelone at the third and Marie Brown at the 18th. Gabor's round of 84 included birdies at the third, sixth, 14th and 17th holes. Also carding birdies were Ginny Cambett at the first. Baker at the ninth and Ginger Sugrue at the Uth. Ruth's Renegades Members of Ruth's Renegades counted scores on odd-numbered holes only and used half handicaps in their weekly tournament last Thursday at Bay Tree and Brier wood. At Bay Tree, top finishers were Karen Mugridge with net 32.5 and Ruth Brown and Jane Mahncke with scores of 36.5. Brown chipped in at the fourth hole and birdied the 1 7th. Also mak ing chip-ins were Laura Paliwoda at the second and Mugridge at the 14th. Top finishers at Brierwood in cluded Elizabeth Carter with 27.5, Alice Struck with 27.5 and Evelyn Wuthrich with 28.5. Reporting chip-ins were Jenny Ward at the fifth hole and Dot Frey at the ninth. Sea Trail Ladies Joan Woriey took first place in the Sea Trail Ladies Golf Association "tee to green" tournament last Wednesday. Carol Patridge and Eleanor Conboy tied for second place. Tied for third were Carol Klapp, Betty Halloran, Ann Otten and Barbara Plate. Brierwood Scramble Hollen Groff, Bob Sterner, Janice Owens and Dede Havenga shot 4 under-par 32 to win the nine-hole Brunswick County Golf Courses Hosting DuPont World Amateur Nine Brunswick County golf courses will help host the DuPont World Amateur Handicap Cham pionship, which begins Monday, Aug. 29, and continues through Thursday, Sept. 1. The annual four-day tournament will bring more than 3,550 amateur golfers to the Myrtle Beach, S.C, area from 49 states and 21 foreign countries. Brick Landing, The Gauntlet at St. James Plantation, Ocean Har bour, The Pearl's west course. Lion's Paw, Sea Trail's Byrd course, Lockwood Links, Brunswick Plant ation and Carolina Shores are among more than 50 courses that are hosting the event. The World Amateur is open to any amateur golfer with a verifiable 18-hole USGA handicap or foreign equivalent. The field will be broken into 38 flights with approximately 100 play era in each flight.
