Bows For POW Day
Auxiliarists for VFW Post 7288 in Calabash make red bows to
commemorate Prisoner of War (POW) and Missing In Action

Whiteville's Harvest Fest
To Feature Original Tarns
The first Whiteville Harvest Fes
tival, set for Saturday, Nov. 5, will
feature several performers headlined
by Robert Lee Smith and The
Original Tarns.
Also scheduled to play are Daniel
Coe, a country singer who has just
released his first compact disc;
bluesman Scott Ainslie, who has
played with Taj Mahal and John Lee
Hooker; and BTW Express, a
jazz/blues quartet.
The main stage will be at the rail
road depot in downtown Whiteville
with acts performing throughout the
day beginning about 10 a.m.
In addition to entertainment, the
festival will have a Kid's Block;
"The Marketplace" for business and
community groups; a cooking con
test judged by Mary Ann Tyndall,
winner of last year's national
Pillsbury Bake-off; an artisans'
block, heritage crafters and the in
clusion of Farm-City Week activities
and displays.

Lions Set Annual Fish Fry
The Shallotte Lions Club 15th an
nual fish fry will be held Saturday,
Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
in the Farmer's Market/Moviemax
parking lot on Main Street, Shal
lotte.
Tickets are $4 and can be ob
tained from any member of the
Shallotte Lions Club. Proceeds help
the blind and visually impaired.
Artists To Meet
The Waterway Art Association
will meet Wednesday, Sept. 21, at
the Sunset Beach fire station.
Members and potential members
are invited to bring a lunch for
shared time beginning at 12:30 p.m.
The business meeting will begin at
1:30.

The Brunswick County Chapter
of thp National Association of Re
tired Federal Employees (NARFE)
will hold its monthly meeting at the
Sand Fiddler Restaurant in South
port Tuesday, Sept. 13, at noon.
Guest speaker will be N.C. Sen.
R.C. Soles, who will discuss the
state legislature and answer ques
tions.
NARFE meetings are open to the
public. Membership is available to
federal retirees and federal employ
ees with at least five years service.

The program will feature Richard
Brown, who recently became Bruns
wick Community College's lead bi
ology instructor. He will speak and
show slides on bird migration and
banding. He is an expert on hawks
and falcons.

The chapter will host its annual
blood drive Saturday, Sept. 17, at
the Calabash fire house, 8:30 a.m.
until 1 p.m. All eligible donors are

Campaign Kickoff or. Sept. 7 at
1 1:30 a.m. at the Wilmington Hilton.
Hosting the festivities will be

Barker. Featured speaker will be
Mary Frances Watkins. a recipient
of Lower Cape Fear Hospice ser
vice. Performing will be the Wilm
ington Golden Pom-Pom Cheerl
eaders, who will cheer the coordina
tors and committees of the 1W4
Pacesetter Companies as they report
their results "team-style."
Following their announcements,
the 1994 campaign goal will be un
veiled by the volunteer Campaign
Cabinet.

Brunswick County History
Course Set For September
A survey course in the history of
Brunswick County, with emphasis
on the towns and communities, will
be offered by Brunswick Com
munity College at its Southport
campus beginning Sept. 12.
Classes will meet Mondays from
10 a.m. until noon except for two
field trips to be planned by class
members. The course will conclude
Nov. 14.
A fee is charged for those
younger than 65.
Instructor for the course will be
Susan Carson, who has been teach
ing local history for the college for
