Training School Class Of '45 Reunited The former Brunswick County Training School's Class of 1945 celebrated its 49th year Aug. 13 and 14 with a reunion. The celebration began with a seafood dinner at Calabash hosted by Either Bryant Covington, a retired librarian who lives in Kinston. After the dinner, the group met for dessert at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Hardie Jr. on N.C. 17 South. Mrs. Covington assume the role of teacher, and class members presented their assignment ? their most funny or memorable experience while in high school. Violet Brown Gill, a retired nurse living in Fayet teville, conducted the memorial service for deceased classmates and teacher, including the late Principal Alvin C. Caviness. The evening's theme was "Make Beautiful Mem ories." On Sunday morning the class and friends wor shipped at Big Macedonia Baptist Church in Supply, the home church of classmate Milton Gore. The Rev. Leo Stevenson welcomed the class, which worships at a dif ferent church in the county each year. The final activity was a luncheon in Southport, where plans weic made for the 50th year reunion and classmate Elbert Gore presided. Local persons working together for the class include Hobson Bryant, Elbert Gore and Dorothy B. Hewitt. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Local Student Nominated To Who's Who Rebecca R. Powell of Shell Point has been nomi nated to have her biography published in "Who's Who Among Ameri can High School Stud ents, 1993-94." She will be eligible to ap ply for a $ 1 ,000 scholarship from $125,000 to be awarded this year. She is the daughter of Jack and Janice Powell of Shell Point and is a Fish, Barbecue Dinner For Tri-Beach VFD This Saturday Tri-Beach Volunteer Fire De partment Ladies Auxiliary will host a fish and barbecue dinner Saturday, Sept. 3, beginning at 11 a.m. The event, to raise money for equipment, will take place at the fire house on Sabbath Home Road, Holden Beach. The auxiliary will be serving fish or barbecue plates with slaw, huoh puppies and frcnch fr.es for $4.50 each. POWELL sophomore at West Brunswick High School. According to a news release, only 5 percent of high school students re ceive the award each year. Causey Helps Plan Society's Biennium Gwen Causey of Supply was among 10 officers and directors of the North Carolina organization of Delta Kappa Gamma honor society meeting recently to plan for the state division's next biennium. Causey is a fifth grade teacher at Shallotte Middle School and is a di rector of N.C. Delta Kappa Gamma's Region IV. Delia Kappa Gamma is an inter national honor society for women educators. Walton On Council Former Chief District Cour Judge Ray Walton of Southport was among six North Carolinians named by Gov. Jim Hunt to the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging. Walton, a retired attorney, lives in Southport. The council examines issues fac ing the elderly and makes recom mendations to the governor and sec retary of human resources. September GED Test Dates Scheduled For Brunswick Area For those who wish to complete their high school diploma, GED tests are scheduled at Brunswick Community College throughout September. All GED tests, except for the writing one, will be given at BCC's main campus on N.C. 17 Business north of Supply, on Tuesdays, Sept. 20. at 5 p.m., and Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. The tests also will be offered at BCC's Southport campus. North Lord Street, on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. and at BCC's Leland Campus (in the Leland Industrial Park just off U.S. 74-76) on Friday. Sept. 21, at 9 a.m. Students wishing to take the writ ing skills test only may do so at the college's main campus on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. Any GED test may be taken at BCC's Southport campus on Thurs day, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. A full range of GED tests also are available at the Leland campus on Friday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. Students may enter GED classes at BCC at any time, individual help in preparing for the GED test is also available at the college's 'earning lab on the main campus.
