CALABASH VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT recently purchased a new pumper truck and first
responders vehicle. Firemen pictured (from left) are James Morgan, safety officer; Barney Morgan,

OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY
Calabash VFD To Show Off Pumper
Calabash Volunteer Fire Department members will
show off their new pumper truck at an open house
Sunday, Sept. 4, from 1 p.m. until 4 u.m.
The six-man freight liner, rr ade by American
LaFrance, features a 1,000-gallon tai.k and can pump up
to 1,250 gallons of water per minute.
"This is a state-of-the-art, world-class pumper," said
James Morgan, safety officer for Calabash VFD.
Firefighters arc holding the open house so communi
ty residents can see how their donations have helped the
department improve its fire protection.
The new pumper was purchased in order to maintain
the district's fire rating, which is used to determine fire
insurance rates. A new pumper was needed because the
department's other pumper is 20 years old.
Also at the open house. Calabash area residents will
get to look over the department's new First Responders
The vehicle is equipped with many of the same med
ical supplies found on an ambulance and has been serv
ing the community for abou' two months.
First responders provide treatment and care until
Calabash Volunteer E.M.S. or Brunswick County
EMS. ambulances arrive.
Calabash VFD has seven members who are certified
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and 10 other
Calabash is one of four fire departments in the coun
ty providing the first responders service. The vehicle
and equipment was purchased with money collected at
periodic "bucket shakes "
The fire department is plan ing several special
event* to raise money needed to equip the new pumper.
The first will be a yard sale Saturday, Sept. 17, at the
fire station. Hours will be 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The department is seeking donations of yard sale
items. They can be dropped off at the fire station any
day except Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon.
Area residents also may call 579-9723 to arrange for
another drop-off time or for large items to be picked up.
Calabash VFD also will be conducting a raffle for a
handmade quilt, which will be on display at the yard
sale and also at some Calabash businesses. The drawing
will be held in November.
Trash Disposal Site To Close
Brunswick County residents may no longer dispose
of their household trash at the dumpster site on Green
Bay Road, off Old Shallotte Road.
The dumpster is being eliminated at the request of
the property owner, according to Heather Sandner,
Brunswick County recycling coordinator.
Residents may instead bring their household trash to
the nearest disposal sites, which are at Fullwood Garage,
U S 17 Bypass; at the intersection of Longwood Road
(N.C <*U) and Pea Landing Read (SR 1304); or iiic
convenience site on N.C. 904 between U.S. 17 and Old
Sandner said anyone found dumping trash or
garbage at the closed site will be prosecuted under the
county's solid waste ordinance
