SRQRIiNGSCENE Handoff-Happy Trojans Discover Passing Game West Bmncu/i^lr U;?k c_i 1 r - - - Doug Ruffe r Sports Editor West Brunswick High School football fans must have been scratching their heads in bewilderment last Fri day night as they watched the Trojans defeat South Brunswick 28-7. They must have had a hard time recognizing thai strange team wearing the green, gold and white uniforms with WEST written on the chest. These can't be our Trojans, they must have been thinking. Under new head coach Yogi Hickman, West Brunswick doesn't look much like the Trojan teams that won state championships in 1992 and 1993. Those teams ran the football. Period. Hickman and new offensive coordinator Heath Hewett have expanded the West offense in 1994 to include a facet of the game that Trojan fans aren't used to seeing. It's called the forward pass, and if the season opene: is any indication West Brunswick will be using a lot of this forward pass thingy the rest of the year. it worked quite well lasi i-iiuay. West's offensive line did a great job giving senior quarterback Eric Johnson the time to throw downficld to open receivers. Johnson completed his first five passes for 76 yards, including a 29 yard touchdown to Ty Brown. Johnson was 9-for-ll in the first half, and one of the incompletions was a desperation heave on the final play of the half. West 's new-found passing game will only help the running game, which remains a key element of the new offense The Trojans rushed for 247 yards last week. Coach Hickman says the 36 rushing plays and 19 passing plays that West Brunswick ran at South Brunswick is the mix the Trojans will use in most of their games this season. Brett Loses Opener Former West Bruns head football coach Jim Brett saw his new team. Northern Nash, lose its season opener 23-14 to Wilson Hunt last Friday. The 9-point loss really wasn't too bad for Brett's Knights. Northern Nssh finished 4-6 last season, while %?Vi ! .v?n Hunt went 11-2 and udvsnccd to the third round of the state playoffs. Also. West Brunswick lost its season openers in both of Brett's seasons in Shallotte So it's hardly time to hit the panic button Home Sweet Home West Brunswick will play its first match on the school's new soccer field next Tuesday, Sept 6. against the Waccamaw Academy Warriors. The Trojans won't be playing any more home matches at Shallotte Middle School, which is good because middle school soccer has been switched from the spring to the fall this year West Brunswick's new soccer field is behind the tennis courts adjacent to the football team's practice field Next Tuesday's match starts at 4 p m. Trojan Coach Teak Hemphill, not to mention the players, would love to see (and hear) a few fans. West's soccer team deserves more support than it is getting. Thus squad is IH-4-5 over the last two years and has a 16-match unbeaten streak against county nvals North Brunsw ick and South Brunswick. Players to watch for West Brunswick include senior forward Chris Payne, who scored five goals in the Trojans' first two matches Payne had a team-high 17 goals laM year and is on pace to shatter his own school record. North Sinks Pirates To End 1 9-Game Losing Streak iiuun orunswicK snapped its 19 gamc losing streak Friday night, scoring three third-quarter touch downs en route to a 33-15 win over Topsail in the high school football season opener. It was the first win for North Brunswick since 1991 and snapped the second-longest losing streak in the state. The Scorpions also made a winner of Garry Bishop in his head coaching debut. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime before North scored three touch downs in the third quarter, including two on interception returns, to pull away from the visiting Pirates. Quarterback Ryan Brew threw a pair of touchdown passes and run ning back Lamont Southerland rushed 17 times for 112 yards to pace the Scorpion offense. The defense also did its part as Mark Lowery and Andre Mosley each returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. The Scor pions forced five turnovers in all. Brew tossed a 68-yard touchdown pass to Lowery in the first quarter and a 43-yarder to Shannon Hankins in the fourth. THREE RIVERS CONFERENCE FOOTBALL STANDINGS Tfaun Cont O'afl PF PA N.
