Jenkins, Grimes Chosen
For Assistant Principal Posts
Two assistant' principal jobs were filled in
house Tuesday by the Brunswick County Board
of Education.
Robert C. Grimes of Lei and was named assis
tant principal of Shallotte Middle School, where
Sandra Robinson is principal. Ronnie Jenkins, al
so of Leland, was named assistant principal of
Southport Elementary School, where Latty Stan
ley is the principal.
Vice Chairman Yvonne Bright conducted the
brief meeting Tuesday in the absence of Chair
man Donna Baxter, who had a death in her fami
ly. Board member Thurman Cause arrived about
IS minutes late and missed the only vote of the
meeting other than for adjournment.
Grimes has past experience as a teacher,
coach and administrator. Since April he has
served as Safe Schools program coordinator for
the northern Brunswick schools, developing,
among other projects, a community service alter
native to out-of-school suspension that was to be
gin this fall. Prior to that he had served as English
teacher and head track coach at North Brunswick
High, serving a stint as interim assistant principal
in fall 1993.
He earned a bachelor of science at Western
University, majoring in English, and received a
master of arts in secondary education leadership
from Western Michigan University in 1973 He is
a candidate for a doctorate in education adminis
tration from East Carolina University.
In addition to teaching and coaching experi
ence in Michigan public schools, Grimes also
worked as a Nasco, Inc., fundraising specialist, a
U.S. Chamber of Commerce membership repre
sentative and as owner and operator of a
pizza parlor.
Jenkins joined the Brunswick County Schools
in 1975 following graduation from N.C. A&T
University in Greensboro with a bachelor's de
gree in history education. He taught social studies
at West Brunswick High from 1975 to 1986, then
transferred to South Brunswick High. During the
1992-93 school year he served as interim assistant
principal of North Brunswick High, before return
ing to the South Brunswick staff. This fall he had
transferred to the Brunswick Learning Center as a
social studies teacher. He earned his master's de
gree in educational administration and supervi
sion from Fayettcville State University in 1992.

her, North Brunswick; Lynn Burroughs. Supply,
Trading Recovery teacher. Supply Elementary;
Ann Griffin, Lancaster, New Hampshire, Reading
Recovery teacher, Lincoln Primary; Diane Bai
lard. Leland, interim special education teacher,
Iceland Middle; Simon Little, Wilmington, inter
im social studies teacher. South Brunswick High;
Donna McQueen, Wilmington, interim French
teacher, Catherine Nicholson, Leland. interim
special education teacher, and Gregory Utton,
Wilmington, interim vocational education teacher.

Also, Ella Robbins, Leland, interim five-hour
cafeteria assistant, Leland Middle; Cassandra
Bryant, Supply, four-hour cafeteria assistant, dri
ver, Learning Center; Yvonne King, Shallotte,
five-hour cafeteria assistant, and Dottie Hatcher,
Winnabow, interim six-hour cafeteria assistant,
Leland Middle.
Approved transfers were Annie Hewett, Sup
ply, from elementary teacher, Supply, to Reading
Recovery teacher. Union Elementary; Thiry
Hayes, Bolivia, from elementary teacher to Read
ing Recovery teacher, Bolivia Elementary; Paige
Hartgrove, Wilmington, from half-time special ed
ucation, Bolivia, to interim full-time spccial edu
cation, Lincoln Primary; Jill Hewett, Shallotte,
Reading Recovery teacher, ftom Union to Bolivia.
Also, Iris Bernard, Southport, four-hour cafe
teria assistant. South Brunswick Middle to seven
hour cafeteria manager/assistant. Learning Center.
The board also accepted the resignation of
Hugh Alltop. physical education teacher at South
Brunswick Middle; and the retirement of Supply
Elementary School teacher Priscilla Shoemaker
of Shallotte.
Leaves of absence were approved from
Aretha Freeman, a cafeteria assistant at Bolivia;
Wilhclmenia Everett, assistant cafeteria manager
at Lincoln; and Saundra McCracken, a teacher as
sistant at Southport Elementary.
