Brunswick County 4-Her Competes In National Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Judah Lindsay of Long Beach was among North Carolina state competitors attending the National 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Contest Aug. 6-10 near Cedar City, Utah. Lindsay was accompanied by coaches Cindy Townsend and Car men Coles. Teams from 30 states competed in five categories designed to teach re sponsible management of natural re sources. They were asked to identify common wildlife foods, interpret wildlife habitat from aerial pho tographs, prescribe wildlife manage ment practices and develop both rur al and urban wildlife management plans. According to a 4-H news release, Utah is a unique area to study be cause it contains all five of the most common wildlife management zones: hot desert, mountain, alpine, cold desert and pinyon/juniper. After the competition, Lindsay took advantage of fishing, target shooting, hiking, mountain biking and horseback tours near the moun tain ski resort. CLUB BRIEFS Brierwood Ladies Club To Hold First Meeting The Brierwood Ladies Club will hold its first meeting of the 1994-95 season on Monday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Brierwood Clubhouse. "This meeting will be devoted to getting acquainted and having some fun," said spokesman Alice Micali. New officers will be introduced and programs for the coming season will be discussed. All female residents of Brierwood are welcome. Seniors To Meet The Holden Beach Senior Citi zens will meet Monday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. at Lockwood Folly Com munity Building. Kris Kime, interim special pro jects coordinator for the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department, will be guest speaker. Tliere will be a cookout. Those over 50 are eligible to join the group. NARFE To Meet The Brunswick County Chapter of the National Associa'ion of Re tired Federal Employees (NARFE) Beautification Group Begins Season On September 1 4 The Holden Beach Beautification Committee will hold its first meet ing of the 1994-95 season on Wed nesday. Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. in the Holden Beach Town Hall meeting room. Myra Burke will preside. After the business meeting, a plant ex change will take place. Hostesses will be Audrey Creger, Mary Alice Foster, Daphne Four nier, ' Colleen Slusher and Lou Thomas. Also during September, the HB BC Beach Sweep chairs, Pat Sand ifer and Martha Spivey, will orga nize Holden Beach's participation in the statewide Big Sweep program Sept. 17. For more information about Big Sweep or to volunteer for the clean up, call Sandifer at 842-6485/3532 or Spivey at 842-8818. Membership in the Holden Beach Beautification Committee is open to all Holden Beach residents. For in formation about membership and group activities, call membership chairman Ruth Roose at 842-3899. will hold its monthly meeting at the Sand Fiddler Restaurant, Southport, at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Guest speaker will be State Rep. Dewey Hill, who will discuss the state legislature and answer ques tions. NARFE meetings are open to the public. Membership is available to federal retirees and federal employ ees wiih at least five years of service. Maultsby Family Planning Reunion The Maultsby family reunion will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, in Bolivia at the home of Evelyn Bells, 1667 Old Ocean Highway. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. Participants are being asked to bring a covered dish. Births Are Announced Chappell Matthew and Candice Chappell of Ash have announced the birth of a daughter, AJyssa Tess Chappell. Born Aug. 21 at 6:23 a.m. at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, she weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces and was 22 inches long. She arrived Aug. 26 at 12:25 a.m. at The Brunswick Hospital, weigh ing 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measur ing 20 inches in length. She has a sister, Ashley Irene Maggard.
