Harvest Craft and Bake Sale to be sponsored by men 'v and women 's groups on Sept. 24. The sale will
take place fn>m 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Southern National Bank, Main Street, Shallotte. Proceeds will

turned home after five weeks at sea
patrolling the waters off the coast of
Haiti in support of Operation Sup
port Democracy.

Bobbitt joined the Marine Corps

Farming Colonies Are Lecture Topic

fessor Frank Ainsley will present
"The Hugh MacRae Farm Colo
nies," a slide/lecture program, at
Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington
Friday, Sept. 9.
The program, which begins at 11
a.m., is part of the Bit of History
lecture series; it is free and open to
the public.
Hugh McRae brought immigrants
from Italy, Poland, the Netherlands,
Germany and other European coun
tries to southeastern North Carolina
in the early 20th century. The com

Ainsley holds a Ph.D. in geogra
phy from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and has
taught geography at UNCW for 21
years. He began his research into
farm colonies in 1982 and has pub
lished articles on the subject in the
Journal of Cultural Geography and
Pioneer America Socicty Trans
actions.
